This week’s Saturday Service Spotlight is a little different, and one that is especially meaningful to me as a veterinarian.

🐄🍂 IT’S WEANING TIME! 🍂🐄

Fall is here, which means for many of our cattle producers, it’s time to start thinking about — or already working through — weaning.

Weaning is a big transition for calves, cows, and producers alike. While some stress is inevitable, there are several things we can do to help make the process smoother and reduce the risk of health problems heading into winter. 👇

🌾 NUTRITION
Make sure calves have access to good-quality feed and plenty of clean, fresh water. A calf that knows how to eat and drink before weaning is already one step ahead!

💉 VACCINATION & DEWORMING
Weaning can be an excellent opportunity to review your herd health program and make sure calves are appropriately vaccinated and dewormed. Building immunity before winter and the next set of challenges is much easier than playing catch-up after calves get sick.

🐄 LOW-STRESS HANDLING
The less stress we can put on calves during weaning, the better. Good handling facilities, calm cattle movement, and options such as fenceline weaning can help reduce the bawling, pacing, and stress that can contribute to illness.

👀 KEEP WATCHING AFTER WEANING
Don’t forget about those calves once they leave the chute! The first week or two after weaning is an important time to keep a close eye on them for signs of respiratory disease or other illness. Early intervention can make a BIG difference.

And remember — there isn’t a one-size-fits-all weaning program. Your herd, facilities, feed resources, vaccination history, and goals all play a role in determining what works best for you.

Healthy calves going into winter start with good management at weaning. 🌾🐄

🍂📅 September Availability Update! 📅🍂

September is here, which means we're officially heading into the busy fall season! 🍁🐄 Between preg checking, weaning, fall processing, and everything else that comes with this time of year, it's going to be a busy one!

I wanted to share a few important dates and availability updates for the month:

🚨 September 12 & 13
I will be providing veterinary coverage for the Indian Relay Race hosted by Sucker Creek Nation! 🐴🏇

I will have limited availability for appointments, calls, and texts on these days, so please keep that in mind if you need to get ahold of me.

🚗 End of September
I will also be away at the end of the month! I may be back and available by the 28th, but after all the driving involved in my trip... we'll see how I'm feeling! 😂🚗

📍 Manning & Across the River Clients

You may notice there aren't any specific dates scheduled for Manning or across the river this month. That doesn't mean I won't be coming out your way!

If there is enough interest or I have clients looking to book, I will absolutely make a day of it and head out! Grouping appointments helps me reduce mileage and makes trips more affordable for everyone.

🍂🐄 The Seasons Are Changing… and So Are the Main Services! 🐄🍂

It feels like we were just busy doing semen testing, and now we're already shifting gears into preg-check season! 😅

It's about to be a hustle-and-bustle season for True North —and this will be my first time running True North full-time during preg-check season! 🙌🐄

A few things to keep in mind as we head into the busy season:

📅 DON'T WAIT TO BOOK!
If you know you have a herd that needs pregnancy testing, start reaching out now! The calendar can fill up quickly once everyone starts pulling bulls and planning fall work. Please Note: I like the bull pulled for a minimum of 35 days before checking! It helps with accuracy!

🖥️ About my current ultrasound:
I can absolutely preg check larger herds with my current machine—it just isn't the fastest setup for cruising through big numbers. That said, it gets the job done! I've already preg checked a herd of 159 head with it. 😉

🥽 But exciting news!
My ultrasound goggles are expected to arrive at the end of the month, which will make getting through those larger herds much more efficient! 🙌🐄

📆 And did I mention… I do weekends and holidays too?! 😎

I know fall is a busy time for everyone, and sometimes weekends are the easiest time to get the whole crew together and get cattle worked. I'm here to help make things as flexible as possible!
