👀🐴Have you seen a horse with one droopy ear and twisted nose?👀🐴

I recently saw a horse with these symptoms! 👇

Horner’s syndrome occurs when the sympathetic nerves supplying the eye and face are disrupted. Because these nerves help control several things around the eye, you can end up with some pretty noticeable changes.

You may see:

👁️ A smaller pupil on the affected side
👁️ A droopy upper eyelid
👁️ The eye appearing sunken
👁️ The third eyelid becoming more visible
💦 Abnormal sweating on the affected side of the face, neck or sometimes further down the body
👃 In some cases, swelling or congestion of the nasal passages

And here’s the important part…

🧠 Horner’s syndrome is a SIGN — not a diagnosis by itself.

Something has affected the sympathetic nerve pathway, and our job is to figure out where and why.

Possible causes in horses include nerve trauma or inflammation, problems associated with injections around the jugular/neck region, and less commonly disease affecting the neck, chest or structures around the guttural pouch.

🔎 SO HOW DO WE TREAT IT?

There isn't one specific “Horner’s treatment.” Treatment is aimed at finding and addressing the underlying cause.

Depending on the history and physical exam, additional diagnostics to try to localize where the nerve problem is occurring. In some cases, the syndrome can occur after nerve irritation or injury and may improve with time as the nerve recovers.

❤️ WHAT ABOUT PROGNOSIS?

This is one of those frustrating answers: it depends! 😂

If the nerve has been temporarily irritated or injured, the outlook can be quite good and the signs may gradually resolve over weeks to months.

However, if there is significant nerve damage or an underlying disease affecting the nerve pathway, the prognosis can be much more variable. Some horses may be left with persistent changes.

The good news is the horse is not in pain but there appearance can be alarming! The bigger concern is figuring out what caused the Horner’s in the first place.

🐴 So if you suddenly notice that one eye looks different from the other, don't just assume your horse is having a weird day. 😂

An exam can help determine whether we're dealing with Horner’s syndrome and, more importantly, what is causing it.

My mother had a gelding with this Syndrome! He never missed a beat and he did great and would occasionally have episode where it was worst (trailering seemed to flare him up)

The equine nervous system is pretty darn cool… and occasionally VERY weird. 😂🧠🐴

🍂🌙 A LITTLE FALL/WINTER APPOINTMENT UPDATE! 🌙❄️

Well folks, the days are getting shorter, the nights are getting longer, and unfortunately, I haven’t figured out how to make daylight last until 11 PM! 😂🔦

So, here are a few things to keep in mind as we head into the darker, colder months!

🌙 EVENING APPOINTMENTS
With how quickly it’s getting dark, evening appointments will be limited unless it’s an emergency or you have a barn with adequate lighting. Right now I will still run after 5 PM appointments but this may not last for long!

🦷 OUTDOOR APPOINTMENTS
Such as equine dental floats. If there isn’t a suitable place to work that offers shelter from the weather, we may need to reschedule. I want to make sure I can work safely and properly, and that your animals are comfortable too!

🐄 PREG CHECKS — RAIN, SNOW, OR SHINE!
Now, don't panic, cattle folks! 😂 Preg checking is still a rain-or-shine appointment! I’ll typically keep going even when it's -30°C. 🥶💪

I generally only cancel preg-checks if you call to cancel unless the roads are unsafe. So please make sure your cattle are ready to go, and we’ll keep plugging along!

As always, a little planning goes a long way this time of year. If you’re unsure whether your setup will work for an appointment, just reach out and we’ll figure it out!

Thanks for understanding as we navigate another Peace Country fall transition into winter! ❄️🚚

Beef cattle vaccines are used to stimulate immunity to a particular bacteria or virus that causes disease. While a tailored herd vaccination protocol should be developed with the help of your veterinarian, the following are "core vaccines" all cow-calf operations should consider.
