🐾 It’s RVT Month! 🐾

October is a time to celebrate the Registered Veterinary Technicians who keep our patients comfortable, our doctors supported, and our clinic running smoothly every single day. 💚

And here at BTVC, we have a pretty amazing crew to celebrate!

Our RVT team includes Deanne, Brittany, Eugenie, Alina, Selena, Sharon & Jenise. 🩺✨

We also have some future RVTs in the making! Alice, one of our VAs, and Leslie, our second year vet tech co-op student, are both working toward their own RVT journeys. 🎓🐾

And of course, we can't forget Gabi, who is an important part of our veterinary technician team and will be back from her maternity leave in November! 💚

Not all pain is the same. 🐾

When we talk about pain in our pets, it can come in different forms, and each type can look a little different.

🔹 Acute pain is usually sudden and short-term, such as pain after surgery, an injury, or an accident.

🔹 Chronic pain lasts for a longer period of time and can have a major impact on a pet's comfort, mobility, and quality of life. Arthritis is a common example.

🔹 Neuropathic pain comes from damage or dysfunction involving the nerves. It can be more difficult to recognize and may require a different approach to treatment.

🔹 Inflammatory pain occurs when inflammation is causing discomfort. It can happen with conditions affecting the joints, skin, digestive system, and other parts of the body.

And sometimes, more than one type of pain can be happening at the same time.

The good news? Pain is something we can often manage. Recognizing that your pet is uncomfortable is the first step toward figuring out why and finding ways to help them feel better.

If you've noticed changes in your pet's movement, behaviour, appetite, sleep, or usual activities, don't wait for things to get worse.

Today is World Su***de Prevention Day 💜

Veterinary medicine is a profession built around caring for others, but the people behind that care need support, too.

The veterinary profession faces unique pressures: long hours, compassion fatigue, burnout, emotionally difficult cases, financial pressures, and the weight of making decisions for patients who can't speak for themselves.

And the statistics are difficult to ignore.

A Canadian study of more than 1,400 veterinarians found that 26.2% reported experiencing suicidal ideation within the previous 12 months.

That's more than 1 in 4!

Research has also found that veterinary technicians have an elevated risk of su***de compared with the general population.

But behind every statistic is a person.

Someone's coworker.
Someone's friend.
Someone's family member.
Someone who spends their days caring for the animals we love.

So today, check in with your veterinary team 💜

Tell your veterinarian, RVT, VA, receptionist, groomer, pet sitter or anyone else who cares for your pets that you appreciate them.

A simple "Thank you for taking care of my pet" can mean more than you realize.

And if you're part of the veterinary community and you're struggling, please know that you don't have to carry it alone. Reaching out is a sign of strength, not weakness. 💜

Cats are good at hiding pain. Really good! 🐱

Unlike dogs, cats don't always make it obvious when something hurts. Their instinct is often to hide signs of weakness, which means pain can sometimes go unnoticed until the problem has significantly progressed.

So what should you watch for?

🐾 Hiding or changes in behaviour
A cat who suddenly spends more time under the bed, in closets, or away from the family may be trying to cope with discomfort. Pain can also cause a normally social cat to become withdrawn, irritable, anxious, or less tolerant of being touched. Even small changes in behaviour can be meaningful.

🐾 Changes in grooming:
Pain can cause a cat to groom less, resulting in a messy or unkempt coat. Some cats may also over-groom one particular area.

🐾 Changes in appetite or drinking:
Eating or drinking less than usual can be an important sign that something isn't right.

🐾 Changes in movement
Hesitating to jump, using the stairs differently, moving more slowly, or avoiding favourite spots can all be subtle signs of discomfort.

Urinating or defecating outside the litter box can be a sign of pain or discomfort, especially if this is a new behaviour. Your cat may be having trouble getting into the box, associating the litter box with pain, or experiencing discomfort when urinating or passing stool.

The tricky part? There may not be one big, obvious sign Often, it's a collection of small changes that tells us something is wrong.

That's why knowing your cat's normal habits is so important. If your cat is acting differently and you can't explain why, give us a call & we can work with you to determine if it is pain related 🐾💚
