Most pet owners don’t realize this: if your pet passes away at home, you usually do not need to rush to make arrangements.

In many cases, there is time to sit with them, hold them, and say goodbye without panic.
Families often worry that there will be an immediate strong odor or rapid changes to the body, but that is usually not the case right away.

Many families can spend several hours, and sometimes up to 24 hours, with their pet before making final arrangements.

You do not need to rush the goodbye. 💙

One of the hardest parts about senior pets?

Sometimes the version your vet sees at the clinic… isn’t the version you’re seeing at home.

I’ve met pets who walked into the clinic looking alert, responsive, even “totally fine.”

Then the family tells me:
👉🏼 they pace all night
👉🏼 they stopped jumping onto the couch weeks ago
👉🏼 they seem restless after everyone goes to bed
👉🏼 they stand in the kitchen and forget why they walked in there
👉🏼 they’re having more bad days than good lately

And honestly… that disconnect is more common than people realize.

Stress and adrenaline can temporarily mask discomfort, especially in aging pets. Some pets go into “survival mode” at the clinic. They hold themselves together for the appointment… then crash once they’re back home in the environment where their real day-to-day life is happening.

That’s why I always tell families: You are not overreacting for noticing the subtle changes. Because those “small things” are often the beginning of a much bigger conversation. And sometimes, talking through those changes at home, where your pet is most relaxed and most themselves, can bring a lot more clarity, reassurance, and support during an incredibly difficult season 🐾🩵

You might not feel ready when it’s time, and that’s something not enough people talk about.

A family recently told me it wasn’t until the very end of the service that they finally felt peace with their decision.
Before that, they kept going back and forth, wondering if it was truly the right time. Because love makes these decisions incredibly hard.

But sometimes readiness doesn’t come before the decision.
Sometimes it comes after.

Not feeling ready doesn’t always mean it’s the wrong choice.
Sometimes it simply means you love them deeply enough to carry the weight of the decision, so they no longer have to carry the weight of suffering 💙

A lot of people hear the word “hospice” and immediately think it means the very end.

However, in veterinary hospice care, many conversations actually begin much earlier than people expect.

Sometimes it looks like helping families manage mobility changes. Adjusting routines. Managing discomfort. Talking through quality of life. Creating more comfort and support at home. Sometimes it simply means having a safe place to ask questions before things reach a crisis point.

Reaching out for hospice support does not mean you are giving up on your pet.

For many families, it means they care deeply enough to start paying attention to comfort, quality of life, and what support may help both their pet and themselves through this stage.

You do not need to have everything figured out before starting the conversation 💙

A lot of people think the hardest part of this journey will be the visit itself, but honestly, for many families, it’s everything that comes before it 💙

It’s carrying the constant questions in your head. Wondering if you’re noticing the “right” signs. Trying to balance hope, guilt, exhaustion, and love all at the same time. It’s the slow changes in routines, mobility, appetite, personality… and quietly realizing things are different now.

By the time many people reach out, they’ve already been holding so much on their own, and one of the things I hear most often after a visit is:
“I wish we’d talked sooner.”

Not because they were ready sooner, but because having support, reassurance, and honest conversations can make this season feel a little less heavy to carry alone.

💬 Quality-of-life conversations are never about pressure or rushing decisions. They’re simply a space to talk through what’s changing, ask questions, and feel supported while you navigate care for your pet 🕊️

Remembering Lilly 🕊️
May 24, 2009 – November 13, 2025

A quiet presence like hers makes a house feel like home 🤍

“She always met us at the door, was always bright and cheerful. She hated the green chair and made sure everyone knew. Lilly was a lap potato. She would climb on my legs whenever I was on the couch with a blanket on me. She loved to cuddle, leaning against me and making me too hot sometimes. She was a dignified queen who never fell off furniture and loved sleeping on her parents' feet. She loved pork.
She was the goodest girl.”

A gentle soul, a loyal companion, and a love that will always be felt.
