🍃 Happy Monday, everyone, and welcome to June!

With summer just around the corner, this month's content will continue exploring one of the most important and misunderstood topics in the dog world: socialization.

Over the past several weeks, we've examined some of the prevailing socialization practices that many dog owners have come to accept as normal. This month, I'd like to shift the conversation and focus on a different question:

If not dog parks, doggy daycares, constant exposure, endless greetings, and the pursuit of friendliness with everyone, then what does healthy socialization actually look like?

In the Way of Life Method, socialization is not about creating dogs that are endlessly social. It is about raising dogs that are socially sound, mentally healthy, and relationally connected. Dogs who can navigate the world with confidence and good judgment. Dogs who can coexist peacefully with people and other animals without feeling compelled to engage with everyone they meet. Dogs who are rooted in meaningful relationships and capable of finding contentment, purpose, and belonging within them.

Throughout June, we'll be exploring how we approach socialization through the lens of the Way of Life Method and why we believe it produces dogs that are not only better behaved, but more resilient, more stable, and more fulfilled.

We'll also be sharing something we've been working on for many months: our new free masterclass introducing the core principles of the Way of Life Method. If you've ever wondered why so many dedicated dog owners remain stuck despite their best efforts, or why common approaches often fail to produce lasting change, I think you'll find it worthwhile.

As always, thank you for being here and for being willing to think deeply about the dogs who share your life with you.

Here's to a wonderful June with our dogs.

Tina’s Border-Aussie mix wasn’t an “easy” dog.

Things had become unmanageable.

But with the right structure and a shift in their way of life, everything began to change.

We’ve been so happy to work with Tina and watch that growth unfold.

This is what’s possible when things are approached differently.

If you’re feeling stuck or overwhelmed with your dog, don’t wait.

Visit our website, explore the Way of Life Method, and take the first step toward real change.

Over the past several weeks, we’ve explored dog parks, daycare environments, large group walks, constant inclusion, and unrestricted greetings as socialization practices that often create more instability and stress than people realize.
But none of these practices would really exist the way they do without a deeper underlying belief: dogs ought to be friendly and social with everyone.
And when we hold that belief, we become much more likely to accept all sorts of experiences that may not actually be healthy for dogs simply because the culture keeps telling us that “socialization” requires them.
But dogs are social animals in the same way that humans are social animals and most emotionally healthy humans do not feel the need to interact with, embrace, or socialize with every person they encounter. We are relational and selective.
Dogs are no different. Most dogs are deeply social with those they know, trust, and share bonds with. They do not necessarily need or want broad social access to everyone around them.
Yet modern dog culture increasingly treats friendliness as the standard by which good dogs are judged. And so dogs are repeatedly placed into overwhelming, overstimulating social situations. Then when things begin unraveling, rather than questioning what we are doing, we question the dogs instead of asking whether the lifestyle itself may simply be asking too much of them.
I think this is an important distinction that modern dog culture often loses sight of: social health is not the same thing as indiscriminate sociability.
Perhaps one of the most important shifts we can make is moving away from asking whether dogs can be friendly with everyone, and asking instead whether they are stable, thoughtful, bonded, resilient, and socially at ease in the lives they are living.

One of the things we value most about the Way of Life Method Academy is that it is much more than an online course or membership platform.
It is an active coaching community where people receive ongoing, personalized guidance as they navigate real life with their dogs. Whether someone is across the country or right here in our local community, the Academy allows us to remain closely connected to our members and support them in a meaningful and consistent way through coaching calls, feedback, discussions, and shared experiences.
Alongside this coaching, we are also proud to host guest speaker events featuring professionals whose work complements ours.
Our guest speaker event this evening is titled Built to Last: Preventing Injury in Active Dogs, featuring Tania Costa of Canine Wellness Centre, whose work focuses on helping dogs remain physically sound, healthy, and capable throughout their lives.
This conversation will explore:
✦ Injury prevention
✦ Physical conditioning
✦ Body awareness
✦ Long-term mobility and soundness
✦ Signs of strain, imbalance, and discomfort
✦ Thoughtful exercise across life stages
✦ Building dogs intentionally rather than just tiring them out
Overall, the event will focus on practical, sustainable ways to help dogs become and remain truly sound across their lifetime because physical wellness is part of behavioural wellness.
If you have been looking for support that goes beyond surface-level training and into the deeper relationship, lifestyle, and developmental factors shaping life with your dog, we would love to welcome you into the Academy community.
And for those who may not realize it, you do not need to live near us to work with us. Through the Academy, we coach dog owners online from a wide range of locations while also offering in-person training opportunities for those within our geographic area.

Happy Monday from Siena the Boxer, Romeo the Vizsla, Oli the Doodle, and Malinois crew Mary, Max, and Nejra, celebrating another successful Way of Life field trip.
🌞🐾
This time, we headed to the Elora Cataract Trailway in Erin, Ontario, undeterred by the fog, muddy trails, and record-breaking rainfall that greeted us along the way. Luckily, the trail itself was flat, making for a wonderful group outing for both people and dogs alike.
Throughout the walk, the dogs enjoyed opportunities to sniff, mark, socialize, and practice manners on dragged lines while navigating encounters with cyclists, joggers, and fellow hikers with their own canine companions.
One of the greatest challenges of these outings is helping dogs manage the excitement and energy that naturally come with being in a new environment and around a larger group of people and dogs. The beginning of the walk is often the hardest, before the group settles into a rhythm and finds that happy middle where focus, responsiveness, and steadiness begin to emerge more naturally.
And of course, the final challenge comes at the end, when tired dogs must still work to maintain good behaviour despite physical and mental fatigue.
We wrapped up the day with a brief collective grounding exercise to water and settle the dogs before loading everyone back into the cars for the ride home.
Here’s to another successful field trip and many more adventures ahead.
Next month? The long-awaited Ruff Mudder in Stayner, Ontario.

Most people buy dog books looking for techniques.

This is not that kind of book.

The Way of Life Method challenges the way we think about behavior entirely.

Inside, you’ll learn:

• Why surface-level training doesn’t always stick
• The difference between behavior and way of life
• How maturity, structure, and leadership shape outcomes
• What it actually takes to raise a sound, strong, and spirited dog

If you’ve tried everything and still feel like something hasn’t fully resolved, this book will help you see the deeper pattern.

It’s not about doing more.

It’s about thinking differently.

Kathryn, thank you.

Your words mean more than you know.

Reactivity can be overwhelming. It can feel isolating. It can make even the most devoted dog guardian question themselves.

Hearing that your dog has healed and matured, and that you feel relief instead of stress, is why we do this work.

Real change is not about quick fixes.

It’s about redesigning daily life, rebuilding trust, and allowing dogs to mature into steadiness.

We are deeply grateful you trusted us with that process.

If you’re struggling with reactivity and wondering whether change is possible, it is.

One of the defining features of the modern dog’s way of life is constant inclusion.
Dogs included in every outing.
Every visitor interaction.
Every moment of activity in the home.

And increasingly, many dogs are struggling with even brief moments of separation or exclusion.

But one of the healthiest things we can teach dogs is how to calmly not be included all the time.
How to wait.
How to settle away from activity.
How to tolerate separation without distress.
How to remain emotionally stable even when access, attention, or interaction are temporarily unavailable.

Because when dogs are included in everything, some eventually begin believing that everything belongs to them.
The movement of people through the home.
Visitors entering space.
Conversations.
Attention.
Activity.

Healthy relationships do not require constant access. In many ways, emotionally resilient dogs are not simply the dogs who can be included in everything, but the dogs who can move comfortably between separation and togetherness.
