Build a Better Hamster Habitat

A well-designed hamster habitat should support natural behaviours such as burrowing, nesting, exploring, chewing, and running—not just provide a place to sleep and eat.

Give your hamster a deep layer of suitable bedding for tunnels, a properly sized solid-surface exercise wheel, secure hideouts, chew-safe enrichment, and scattered food opportunities that encourage foraging.

Keep the enclosure in a quiet area away from direct sun and strong drafts, and spot-clean high-use areas while preserving some familiar nesting material so the habitat does not lose every comforting scent at once.

Because hamster species differ in size and housing needs, choose enclosure dimensions and accessories that are appropriate for your individual pet.

Fun Fact Friday!

Many companion birds are natural foragers, which means searching, shredding, climbing, and working for food can be an important part of their daily behaviour.

Offering safe foraging opportunities and rotating appropriate toys can encourage movement and problem-solving instead of leaving every meal in the same easy-to-reach spot.

Enrichment should always match your bird’s species, size, and confidence level, with new items introduced gradually so they can investigate at their own pace.

Healthy aquarium care starts with stable water conditions, and seasonal temperature changes can affect tanks located near windows, exterior walls, vents, or drafty rooms.

Check your aquarium thermometer regularly, keep the tank away from rapid temperature swings, and test key water parameters on a consistent schedule so small changes are caught early.

Perform partial water changes with properly conditioned water, avoid replacing all filter media at the same time, and remove excess food before it breaks down and adds waste to the system.

A steady maintenance routine supports beneficial bacteria, clearer water, and a more stable environment for your fish.

Fun Fact Friday!

Many aquarium fish can learn predictable feeding routines and may begin swimming toward the front of the tank when they see the person who usually feeds them.

Fish respond to repeated cues such as movement, light changes, and timing, which shows why consistency can be useful in aquarium care.

Just remember that enthusiastic behaviour does not always mean a fish needs more food—measured portions help reduce overfeeding and unnecessary waste in the tank.

Fuel everyday adventures with ACANA Classics Red Meat Recipe Dog Food, a popular recipe featured among Pet Valu’s top-selling Canadian pet products.

This dry food is designed for adult dogs and offers animal-protein ingredients in a convenient everyday kibble format, making it worth considering for pet parents reviewing their dog’s regular nutrition plan.

Stop by Bosley’s – Maple Ridge to ask about feeding guidance and how to transition gradually if you are changing your dog’s food.

A consistent litter-box setup is one of the most important parts of everyday cat care because cats often prefer clean, quiet, easy-to-access bathroom areas.

As a general household rule, provide enough boxes for your cats, place them in separate low-stress locations, and scoop frequently so odour and waste do not build up.

Pay attention to litter texture, box size, entry height, and sudden changes in bathroom habits, because small environmental details can strongly affect whether a cat feels comfortable using the box.

When changing litter or box style, introduce the new option gradually rather than replacing everything at once, giving your cat time to adjust.

Fun Fact Friday!

A cat’s whiskers are highly sensitive touch receptors that help them judge nearby spaces, detect subtle air movement, and navigate their environment—especially in low light.

Because whiskers provide important sensory information, cats can become uncomfortable when their whiskers are repeatedly pressed against the sides of narrow food or water bowls.

A wide, shallow dish may feel more comfortable for some cats and can make mealtime a little more pleasant.

Make litter-box maintenance easier with Fresh 4 Life Odour Destroyer High Performance Clumping Cat Litter, a top-rated option featured on Pet Valu’s website.

A reliable clumping litter can simplify daily scooping and help keep the litter area fresher, which supports a more comfortable routine for both cats and their people.

For best results, maintain an appropriate litter depth, scoop at least once daily, and refresh the box regularly. Ask the Bosley’s – Maple Ridge team about litter options that match your cat’s preferences and your household setup.
