🐾 COURTESY POST: Adopt Hercules 🐾
6.5 years old | Male | Intact (Neuter on Sept 14th)
Hercules is a big German Shepherd who, up until now, has had a very small world. He has spent most of his life as an outdoor dog and hasn’t had many opportunities to experience anything beyond his property. However, he is now ready to begin his new life! He has started his journey to learn new skills and discover what it means to be a companion dog.
Hercules is currently practicing leash walking, basic commands and good manners. He is doing well with his lessons and, like any dog learning something new, has plenty of room to grow.
Hercules will take some time to warm up to new people, however, once Hercules gets to know you, his sweet side really shines. He loves attention, pets and being brushed, and enjoys spending time near his people.
Because Hercules has had limited social experiences, his ideal home will be one that can give him time, patience, structure and continued positive-reinforcement training as he builds his confidence and skills. He will need a home without children or small animals and would do best with someone comfortable working with a large, intelligent breed who is still learning his manners.
Hercules has also shown resource-guarding behavior around food, so his new family will need to understand and appropriately manage this while continuing his training.
He has had very limited experience with other dogs, although he enjoys running along the fence with the neighbor’s dog, he has not yet had an opportunity to meet dogs face-to-face. At this stage, we believe it is best if he the only dog in the home.
Hercules hasn't had much exposure to car travel or walks away from his property, so these will be new adventures for him. Luckily he has some very wonderful people in his life who have begun working on leashed walks around the property as well as basic training.
Hercules is looking for someone who sees the potential in him and is willing to help him catch up on the experiences he missed earlier in life. With consistency, patience and guidance, he has the opportunity to become a wonderful companion.
Best suited for:
• Experienced dog owners
• A quiet, structured home
• No children
• No animals
• Someone committed to continued training and positive reinforcement
• A family willing to give him time to adjust and learn
