Breed of the week: AFFENPINSCHER

Bold, fearless and confident this a small dog with a BIG personality and an ADORABLE face.

Need to exterminate rats and others in Germany in the 1600s.

Their wiry fur is considered more allergy friendly.

Affenpinchers would love active homes and would love to participate in barn hunt, agility, nose work or be an ever present outdoor companion on your hiking and camping trips! They also love to snuggle in bed with you at the end of the day

This is Cider who I had the pleasure of working with this weekend and she was so charming 😍

LOOK AT HIM.

PICO - ADOPTED

Hi, I’m Pico! I’m a four-year-old long-haired Chihuahua weighing approximately 5lbs. I may be tiny, but I have a big personality, plenty of confidence and so much love to give!

I’m a very friendly little guy who confidently approaches new dogs of all sizes. I’ve done wonderfully in smaller group settings and even took a special liking to a much larger foster dog named Spencer! I could happily live with a doggie sibling, but I would also be content soaking up all the attention as your only dog. I haven’t been tested with cats yet. I’m also great with children and did an amazing job meeting them at a busy event.

I have a medium energy level and love playing, exploring and joining my people on fun adventures. I’m not particularly interested in toys yet, although squeaky toys are beginning to catch my attention. I’m also good in the car, even if I feel a little nervous at first. One of my favourite things is being picked up and cuddled…I’ll even ask you to carry me!

I’m crate-trained and settle very nicely in my crate. My house-training is still a work in progress because I have a tiny bladder and a habit of marking. I’m slowly improving with p*e pads, and the good news is that I’m excellent about doing all of my business outside when I’m taken out regularly. My future family will need to be prepared for frequent bathroom breaks and continue patiently working on my training.

Inside my apartment, I’m generally a pretty good neighbour. If another dog begins barking, though, I can be easily influenced and may decide to join the conversation. I’ve also developed some leash reactivity as my personality has come out. When I see another person or dog while walking, I can become very worked up, barky and sound much fiercer than the sweet little dog I truly am. My future family will need to take this seriously and be committed to helping me build calmer walking habits through consistent, positive training. Picking me up may be tempting, but I’ll benefit most from someone willing to help me learn how to handle these situations confidently.

I’ve been friendly when meeting new people and dogs with my foster family and have also stayed overnight with another caregiver without any issues. However, veterinary staff have reported that I became growly and defensive following my neuter and dental procedures. Unfamiliar environments and medical handling can be stressful for me, so my future family should be prepared to advocate for me and use patience, caution and positive handling during vet visits.

Overall, I’m a confident, affectionate and adventurous little sweetheart. I’m looking for a person or family who understands that even though I’m only five pounds, I still need structure, training and opportunities to explore the world on my own four feet. With continued work on my leash manners and house-training, I’m going to be an incredibly fun and loving companion!

If you think that you would be the perfect home for me please fill out the application on the website!

🐾 Myth vs. Fact: A Tired Dog Is Always a Well-Behaved Dog

MYTH: “If my dog is exhausted, they’ll stop misbehaving.”

FACT: Physical exercise is important, but mental enrichment and training are just as essential. Many unwanted behaviours stem from boredom, frustration, or a lack of life skills—not simply too much energy.

A balanced routine includes:
🐶 Physical exercise
🧠 Mental enrichment
🎓 Appropriate training
😴 Plenty of rest

A fulfilled dog is often happier than an exhausted one!

Shout out to Tori at Market Pet Shop for giving the dogs a post camping glow up. They had fun getting dirty for the week - now I’m happy they’re clean.
Tori /market pet is the ONLY PERSON/company I have repeatedly seen with my dogs for grooming. Other people haven’t done an adequate job or worse yet didn’t treat my dogs with the care they deserved and made them uncomfortable (& in one instance unsafe!). Tori the dogs and I trust and she does a great job!
