This is what quality time looks like with a parrot. Honestly, after a long shift I would rather come home to this vs a human child (… jk?) 😂. But in all seriousness, having a pet bird is a HUGE commitment. They are needy, demanding, and require lots of one on one boding time with their humans. They truly believe you are part of their flock, and they have feelings and emotions that are sometimes even stronger than that of a dog or cat. These are very special creatures, but behind the scenes they can be a lot of work, a tremendous responsibility. Make sure to do your research if you’re considering getting one AND have a plan because these little dinosaurs can live a very very long time. They can die easily so you need to bird proof your house before getting one. These aren’t animals that you just leave in a cage all day and let them out occasionally… because that would be considered neglect. It’s so much more than you think.

This is just me giving you the real version, de-influencing you from getting one. On social media they may look cute and seem like a very easy pet to have, but in reality they are one of the most high maintenance pets you can have. I knew what I was getting myself into, and I wouldn’t change it for the world. He’s my best buddie, my p**p buddy 😂♥️

You are not alone. Social media may make you think you are, but in reality we all go through the same struggles behind close doors. We are all human. Go talk to someone even if you feel like you’re not struggling. We all need a healthy outlet to grow, being vulnerable does not = weakness. Compartmentalising your emotions is not a solution, WE NEED YOU IN THIS WORLD. Therapy makes all the difference, I promise ♥️

Not the chocolate lab ingesting almost 500-800 grams of milk chocolate 🍫 😱

… and low key why does he sounds like my husband when he vomits, so dang violent! 😂

This naughty boy got into a fresh bag of chocolates while his mom wasn’t looking. A mg/kg dose was calculated and there was a moderate concern for toxicity. Chocolate toxicity in dogs is caused by the ingestion of methylxanthines (theobromine and caffeine), which can overstimulate the central nervous system and cardiovascular system. Cardiac involvement ranges from mild tachycardia / high heart rate, to life-threatening arrhythmias and heart failure, particularly with dark chocolate or cocoa powder.

We quickly decontaminated by inducing vomiting with something called apomorphine administered IV. We then administered a dose of oral charcoal to bind any remaining toxins in the stomach, we don’t always do this but we did it since owner elected outpatient treatment vs hospitalisation. We better be safe than sorry. I gave him some fluids under the skin to rehydrate him and reversed the effects of apomorphine (vomiting and nausea) with an injection of maropitant, a 24 hour anti-nausea medication.

Sometimes gold standard medicine is not feasible for some pet parents, so giving them viable options and great education is KEY. I sent them home with lots of handouts to read and told them to come back if he starts showing concerning clinical signs:

* Vomiting or diarrhea, especially repeated episodes
* Restlessness, pacing, hyperactivity, or inability to settle
* Excessive panting
* Increased thirst or urination
* Rapid or pounding heartbeat
* Muscle twitching or tremors
* Weakness, wobbliness, or unusual behavior
* Seizures, collapse, or severe agitation

I called the owner the next day and this good boy was doing great. Make this a lesson for you and your pets! Chocolate can be very toxic to animals so always keep it away! If your dog or cat accidentally eats chocolate take them to see your veterinarian right away to induce vomiting, it may save their life. Not every pet is this lucky 🙏

🔉Using an ultrasound I did a FAST scan of the chest and abdomen and was able to diagnosed a pericardial effusion / fluid around the heart sac, a significant hemoabdomen / a belly full of blood which I sampled to confirm, and the potential culprit / a multi-cavitated mass. I was able to locate both kidneys separately, I know what some of you may be thinking, but nope that was a mass and not a big ole kidney. 💔 this old lady was 15 years old and I had to break this terrible news to her dad. This happened while juggling other critical cases (ie a dog that drowned / tub dog, a cat with DIC / bleeding out, a cat with severe kidney failure, and had about 3 other stable patients with vomiting and diarrhea), all while helping lead my incredible team. The crazy part is that 5 outpatients were still waiting to be seen. Behind me there was a lot going on that you can’t see 🥵. Busy day.
