With all the wildfires that have been happening, this is an important reminder!

We all know the importance of having a fire safety plan in place, in the event of an at-home blaze, but did you know you need to also include your pets? Not only does this ensure you are able to get them out safely, but it also lets first responders know of any pets in the residence.

Here are some tips:

💨 Make sure you have working smoke alarms in the home. Test them once a month, and replace any that are past their expiry date.

🐶 We all know the importance of microchips, so make sure your pet has one with its information up-to-date, in case they escape during an emergency situation.

🏃 Have an escape plan, which includes everyone knowing their role (including who is responsible for grabbing the pets) and the best routes to take out of the house.

🧑‍🚒 Let first responders know of any pets in the house. This can't always be done in a chaotic emergency situation, so it's recommended placing an alert sticker on your door or on one of your front windows, detailing the number and type of pets who live with you.

🏥 Have a pet-specific emergency kit prepared. Similar to the one you'd keep in your vehicle for yourself, this should include the necessities: food, water, leash, blanket(s), medication, important documents and a few toys.

On top of all this, prevention is key! Keep all lit and exposed flames out of reach of pets, and if your furry friend is a chewer, make sure electrical cords are out of sight and away from their mouths. Oh, and if you have a fireplace, keep them away from it!

❗️Don't let your dogs go swimming or drink from puddles until the smoke clears❗️

Stay safe to all of our northern friends who are being affected by the wildfires, the smoke and ash. Our thoughts are with you.

For our friends in Southern Ontario, the smoke has made its way here too. It's important that we take the precautions not only to protect ourselves but also our pets. Keep a close eye on the air quality as it can shift fast!

On days with poor air quality:
• Keep walks short and avoid strenuous exercise.
• Choose potty breaks over long adventures.
• Keep windows closed when possible and use air conditioning or an air purifier if you have one.
• Wipe your dog's paws and coat after spending time outside to remove ash and other particles.
• Make sure fresh water is always available.
• Watch for signs of smoke irritation, such as coughing, wheezing, difficulty breathing, watery eyes, or unusual tiredness. If you're concerned, please contact your veterinarian.

Our dogs rely on us to make the safest choices for them. A quieter day indoors with a puzzle toy, snuffle mat, frozen treat, or training session is a great way to keep them happy while avoiding the smoky air.

Stay safe everybody

With wildfire smoke affecting air quality across our region, it's important to remember that our animal companions are breathing the same air we are.

Smoke and fine particles can irritate their eyes and airways and may be especially dangerous for young, senior, or animal companions with heart or respiratory conditions.

Here are a few simple ways to help keep your animal companions safe during this time:

Limit outdoor time. Keep walks short and avoid strenuous exercise until air quality improves. Consider indoor enrichment instead of long walks or trips to the dog park.

Keep animal companions indoors as much as possible. Close windows and doors and, if available, use air conditioning or an air purifier to help improve indoor air quality.

Provide plenty of fresh water. Staying hydrated helps support your animal companion's overall health.

Watch for signs of smoke irritation, including:

➡️ Coughing or gagging
➡️ Sneezing or wheezing
➡️ Difficulty breathing or rapid breathing
➡️ Eye redness or discharge
➡️ Lethargy or unusual tiredness

If your animal companion shows any of these signs, move them into a cleaner indoor environment and contact your veterinarian for advice. If they are having significant difficulty breathing, seek veterinary care immediately.

Some animal companions are at greater risk, including:

➡️ Flat-faced (brachycephalic) breeds such as Bulldogs, Pugs, and Persian cats
➡️ Puppies and kittens
➡️ Senior animal companions
➡️ Animal companions with asthma, heart disease, or other respiratory conditions

PLEASE, PLEASE...use a lot of caution with your pets in this hot humid weather. It does not take much for a pet to get heat stroke and HEAT STROKE CAN KILL! Don't leave them outside too long. Don't walk or run them in the heat of the day, walks in the early morning or late evening are best. The hot pavement can also do damage to the sensitive pads on their feet. It is especially bad for the brachycephalic dogs ( pugs, french bulldogs, english bulldogs etc) as they already have breathing issues and things can escalate quickly.
If you noticed any signs of heat stroke seek immediate veterinary care.

5 second rule!🐾💕

That pavement is hotter than you think. If it's uncomfortable to hold your hand on it for 5 seconds, it's too hot for your dog's paws.

Summer is a blast, but it comes with a few hidden hazards for your pets. Here's what to keep in mind before heading out this season:

🐕 Skip the pavement on hot days, go for grass!
🚘 No leaving pets in parked cars. Ever.
🌊 Always have fresh water and a cool shady spot
🦟 Stay on top of flea, tick, and heartworm prevention
💛 Know your dog's limits. Some breeds and older dogs feel the heat more.

Summer + your pet can be the best combo. Just go in prepared. ❤️

Did you know dogs and cats can get sunburned, especially on their ears, noses, and other exposed areas? Or that short-nosed breeds like Pugs and Bulldogs can struggle more to cool down because they rely on panting?

Summer heat can be tough on pets, and they rely on us to help keep them safe and comfortable. Hot pavement can burn sensitive paw pads, parked cars can heat up dangerously fast, and shaving a coat can actually do more harm than good by removing natural insulation.

Instead, focus on shade, fresh water, avoiding the hottest parts of the day, and regular brushing to help manage shedding. Always keep an eye out for signs of overheating like heavy panting, drooling, weakness, or disorientation.

Fun fact, ticks are actually parasitic arachnids, part of the spider family(my least favourite kind of bugs)🕷️

🌿🐾 TICK SEASON IS HERE!🐾🌿

As the weather gets warmer, ticks are becoming more active — and that means it’s important to protect both our pets and ourselves! ☀️
Ticks can carry diseases such as Lyme disease, which can affect dogs and humans alike.
After walks, hikes, or even time spent in the backyard, be sure to!

✔️Feel around ears, neck, paws, armpits, and under collars
✔️ Check your pets thoroughly and routinely for ticks
✔️ Keep your pets on veterinarian-approved tick prevention
✔️ Remove ticks carefully with tweezers or a tick remover

Even indoor pets can occasionally be exposed, so prevention is key! 🩺
If you find a tick on your pet and notice symptoms like lethargy, limping, loss of appetite, or fever afterward, contact your veterinarian.
