My top 5 Horror Movies.
1) Don’t worry my dog is friendly
Maybe my dog isn’t friendly.
Maybe my dog is reactive.
Maybe my dog is scared and another dog charging them is terrifying.
Maybe I’m just trying to train a well manner Dog and I don’t want on leash dog greetings let alone being charged.
2) They are protecting me or my house.
I have yet to meet a dog where this is true. A dog confident enough to protect others is very rare. Usually the behavior that we would see as protective is actually fear.
3) My dog is trained. I went to a six week puppy class.
Think about Dog Training like any other skill. You can’t play the piano a few times and think that you are now a piano player. You don’t go to the gym and then stop going and think that you are still in shape. You don’t learn French in high school and then never use it and think that you can still speak French. All of these skills must be practiced and maintained.
4) My high energy dog is well exercised.
A walk is not doing what you think it is doing. When we’re thinking about fulfilling a high energy Dog, we need to think about running. We need to think about making them think and problems solve. We need to think about what their breed was intended to do and helpful fulfill them in that way. For these dogs, a walk is never going to be enough.
5) They just need love.
Dammit how I wish this one was true. If it was true, I wouldn’t have a job. If it was this easy, we wouldn’t still have behavioral issues. Behind every dog that struggles is someone who loves that dog endlessly, but that’s never going to be enough. They need structure, they need rules, they need boundaries, they need fulfillment, they need training.
