Salting a dog hide I’m tanning. This one won’t be for a taxidermy mount, it’s skinned to lay flat similar to a rug. I usually do two saltings to get it mostly dry before returning to a fresh pickle.

Splitting the lips on a hide today, fleshed the main body on my fleshing beam yesterday. Only the lips are shown half-split here.

There’s skin that needs to be split on the lips and eyes, as well as the ear skin from the cartilage, to expose small amounts of fat and meat to be removed and lengthen the skin for future tucking on the form.

I remove the nose cartilage and split the nostril flaps, and finished fleshing the membrane and fat remaining on the face. I cut a # pattern into the whisker pads to expose the whisker follicles to the salt and pickle. Next it will be heavily salted until mostly dry, before going back into a clean pickle with some degreaser added.

WARNING GORESome of todays work.
I overexerted myself today trying to lift this 50lb dog soaking wet to drain. The owner wanted her hide tanned, skull cleaned, paws and ears made into charms. I had to go lay down for a few hours after I skinned her as I was up all last night sick and could barely walk straight after. 😴 I got the hard part done at least today. Filtered over the photos to remove the red colour, to avoid it being flagged. Going to sleep good tonight!

I took in this lovely girl Loki today, she was immediately put into an acidic pickle bath, whole, for thawing. I thaw all my pets and irreplaceable skins directly in a pickle bath. It’s good for thawing anything you get in that might be iffy or at risk of slipping already. I usually do 5 gallons for animals around 20lbs, or 10 gallons for pets up to 50lbs. I mix up 5lbs of fine salt and 2.5oz of safety acid per 5 gallons of water. Thawing pets directly In the pickle locks the hair follicle into the skin and kills any bacteria on the surface of the skin. It allows me to skin at a slower pace and flesh and turn the face properly (and I’m a very slow skinner 😂) without the risk of hair slip. The ears (usually the first to thaw, thin skin) and belly are usually the first areas you will get hair slip due to bacteria or heat. This extra step eliminates any chance of slip for me and allows me to take my time on my hide prep.

I had a drop-off today and what my customers told me really shocked and disappointed me.

They had tried other taxidermists before they found me, who refused to take their dog, and one taxidermist called them “immoral” and yelled at them for even asking. 😡 That’s unprofessional and extremely rude, especially to a couple who are grieving the loss of their pet. I can’t believe a professional taxidermist would act that way! I get that most taxidermists won’t take on pets, for various reasons, but there’s no need to flip out about it, just politely decline.

I take my pet memorial work seriously as I understand the grief of losing a pet. I sometimes get hate for what I do by cry-baby losers online (only a few so far), but waaaay more people respecting the craft. My customers are constantly telling me they appreciate what I do and that I’m willing to work with pets, knowing the effort that goes into the custom form making. Pet taxidermy is growing in popularity and losing its stigma, as well as taxidermy in general. It is being seen rightfully as a highly artistic professional trade, combining drafting, molding and casting, anatomy, dissection, sculpture, repair work, carpentry, carving, tanning, painting, grooming, sewing, leatherwork, knowledge of animal behaviour, habitat and foliage creation, chemical and science knowledge, etc…..rather than a backwoods “stuffing” hobby (taxidermy doesn’t involve stuffing anything, unless it’s a “soft mount”) as in previous decades, so I expect more pet work in the future.

My customer expressed interest in learning from me, specifically pets as he thinks it’s a very important service to keep alive and really respects it. That made me really flattered to hear. 😊 I have had a few other people contact me about apprenticing or classes from me. Once I get a decent shop setup in the future, I will be contacting them and offering classes on taxidermy and custom form pet techniques.

To anyone wanting to keep their pet with them after they pass away, don’t let other nay-sayers tear you down or call you weird.
Bring them to Gustavson Taxidermy Studio, where I understand and respect your wishes to keep your friend with you. I’ll be glad to help you get the pet memorial services you need! 🐾

Mapping out an underpainting today. This one will have a nice fall scene when it’s finished. This will be my last pet portrait for a while. I’ll be focusing more on taxidermy, doing less skeleton and portrait work.
