Have a Bubby Wubby Joe long weekend, PAACT community! 🐾

In a little over a year since Mr. Joe was rescued, he has made truly remarkable progress. From arriving in critical condition to becoming the confident, curious, and wonderfully opinionated cat we know today, Joe continues to show us just how much life he has left to enjoy.

His diabetes management is going fantastically, and the difference in his health, energy, and overall quality of life has been incredible to witness. These days, Joe is fully embracing his “adventure era.” He loves exploring the neighbourhood, visiting new places, playing with his toys in the yard, stretching out in the sunshine, and greeting anyone willing to stop for a conversation.

And Joe always has plenty to say. Whether he is asking to go outside, announcing his arrival, or simply providing a running commentary on the day, he makes sure everyone knows exactly what he is thinking. His adventures are usually accompanied by plenty of chatter, deep purrs, and biscuits whenever he is especially content.

Joe is also very good at communicating exactly what he wants. He prefers to drink his water directly from the tap and has developed his own little routine for requesting it. He will position himself somewhere his mom is sure to see him, patiently wait for her to move, and then immediately begin leading her toward the tap. There is rarely any confusion about where they are going—or what Joe expects to happen once they arrive. His method is apparently quite effective, as he has even taught one of his feline friends, who also prefers fresh water, exactly how to ask for it.

At home, Joe is equal parts affectionate companion and professional space invader. He enjoys stealing his mom’s pillow at night and then, apparently deciding that one pillow is not enough, using her face as his own. Personal space is merely a suggestion when you live with Bubby Wubby Joe.

He may enjoy his outdoor adventures, but Joe also deeply appreciates the quieter parts of life: a warm patch of sunshine, a comfortable place to rest, his favourite people nearby, and the security of knowing that he is safe and loved.

Mr. Joe’s personality has only grown brighter as his health has improved. He is social, affectionate, playful, clever, curious, talkative, slightly mischievous, and completely unapologetic about taking up exactly as much space as he believes he deserves.

We hope everyone approaches the long weekend just like Joe: enjoy an adventure, play with your favourite toy, find a sunny place to relax, drink directly from the tap if someone will allow it, and steal someone else’s pillow when the day is done. 😽

After careful consideration, PAACT has made the difficult decision to suspend our Tail End Journey (TEJ) and Foster Friends for Healing (FFFH) programs for the foreseeable future.

This is not a decision we wanted to make. We created these programs because we care about keeping animals safe, supporting pets & their people through difficult circumstances, and preventing pets from being left without somewhere to go.

However, both programs were designed as community-supported initiatives and cannot be sustained by PAACT’s small core team alone. TEJ requires suitable adopters, while FFFH requires committed foster homes. Both programs also depend on volunteers to screen applications, coordinate placements, provide follow-up support, and respond when challenges arise.

Currently, we do not have enough foster homes, adopters, volunteers, or organizational capacity to operate these programs safely and sustainably. We cannot personally foster or adopt every animal, nor can a small number of people continue carrying every part of these programs.

Effective immediately, PAACT will not be accepting new TEJ or FFFH support requests. This is a suspension, not a permanent closure.

Our immediate priority is supporting the animals already involved with PAACT and helping those currently awaiting adoption find suitable homes. Their profiles will continue to be shared, and those involved in active cases will be contacted directly regarding next steps.

While these programs are suspended, PAACT will also be developing a resource page to help community members navigate safe and responsible pet rehoming. Please stay tuned as these resources become available.

We wish we could say yes to every person and animal who needs help. However, animal welfare and advocacy cannot be carried by only a few people. Without community members willing to foster, adopt, volunteer, and share the responsibility, these services simply cannot operate.

PAACT remains committed to supporting animals and the people who love them, but creating meaningful and lasting change in our community must be a shared effort.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who helped make our Second Chances, Second Treasures Garage Sale Fundraiser possible!

Together, we raised an incredible $753.75 to help support animals in need and the people who love them!

Thank you to the volunteers who helped set up, organize, support the sale, and pack everything up afterward. We are also incredibly grateful to everyone who donated items, stopped by to shop, contributed what they could, purchased a frozen treat from Cowlick Cruiser Frozen Treats, or helped spread the word.

A very special thank you to Sentinel Storage and the lovely ladies there for allowing us to host the sale at their location, helping us navigate the last-minute changes, and being so welcoming and supportive throughout the event.

Every contribution—whether it was your time, energy, donations, or support—helped create a meaningful imPAACT in our community. We could not have done it without you!

PAACT’s Second Chances, Second Treasures Garage Sale Fundraiser has a new location and shortened event hours!

🚨 WE URGENTLY NEED COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERS 🚨

We desperately need additional hands to make this fundraiser possible—particularly volunteers who can assist with:
• Moving and carrying donated items
• Setting up tables and merchandise
• Helping customers during the sale
• Packing, cleanup, and takedown afterward

Even one or two hours of help would make a meaningful difference. PAACT is entirely volunteer-run, and our small core team cannot successfully carry out this event without community support.

Two years ago, on August 25, 2024, PAACT was launched with an idea: to take a different approach to animal welfare and advocacy.

We saw gaps in our community and believed there was room for something different—an organization focused not only on supporting animals in need, but also on supporting the people who love and care for them.

Because sometimes helping an animal means providing food or supplies. Sometimes it means helping a family through a difficult period. Sometimes it means education, advocacy, connecting someone with the right resources, or finding an alternative before surrender or rehoming becomes the only option.

Over the past two years, PAACT has supported thousands of animals and their people, helped prevent rehoming and surrender situations, provided essential pet supplies, connected families with resources, supported responsible rehoming when staying together was no longer possible, and continued learning where the gaps in our community remain.

PAACT has changed and grown considerably since August 2024—and we are still growing.

100% FREE Pet Food, Veterinary Diets, Supplies & Essentials!

No one should have to choose between feeding themselves and feeding their pet. And yet, when we hear that someone cannot afford pet food, litter, or another basic necessity, judgment from the community happens almost instantly: “If you can’t afford to feed your pet, you shouldn’t have one.”

But that statement leaves out something incredibly important: life can change very quickly. A medical emergency. A lost job. An unexpected bill. A family crisis. The rising cost of groceries, rent, utilities, veterinary care, and everything in between.
Someone who could comfortably provide for their pet six months ago may suddenly be struggling to keep food on both their table and in their pet’s bowl.

And they are far from alone.

Recent data estimates that roughly 70% of people in Lethbridge have at least one animal, while Alberta is home to an estimated 4 million+ companion animals. Many of those animals are safe, loved, and in homes today because ordinary people chose to take responsibility for them.

At the same time, mental health challenges in our community have increased significantly in recent years. And approximately 86% of pet owners report that their pets have a positive impact on their mental health.

THAT MATTERS!

Because when someone is already experiencing financial hardship, illness, grief, housing instability, job loss, or another crisis, losing their pet does not simply mean losing an animal.

It can mean losing family, routine, connection, comfort, and stability — and sometimes, one of the few things helping that person get through an incredibly difficult period.

This is where PAACT's Care Closet comes in. The Care Closet is a 100% FREE community support program providing essential pet supplies to people experiencing temporary need. Depending on available donations, this can include things such as Pet food, Veterinary diets, Cat litter, Kennels, Beds, Leashes, Collars, and more.

When someone reaches out and says, “I need help feeding my pet,” we do not believe the first response should be judgment. They reached out. They are trying.

Providing pet food or supplies may seem simple, but the impact can reach much further.
It can mean groceries stay on the table. It can mean a pet stays fed while their person gets through an unexpected expense. It can reduce stress during an already difficult situation.

And most importantly, it can help prevent a temporary financial hardship from becoming a permanent, crisis-driven, and potentially traumatic separation between a pet and the person who loves them.

That is the purpose of the Care Closet.

We cannot fix every circumstance someone is facing. But sometimes, removing one immediate pressure can give a person enough breathing room to focus on everything else. By providing essential pet supplies at no cost, PAACT works to create that safety net — supporting the well-being of animals, the people who love them, and the human–animal bond that connects them.

Pets are family. Asking for help feeding them does not change that.

PAACT will be temporarily “closed” from Saturday, August 22, through Monday, September 7. We will return on Tuesday, September 8.

🚨 If you anticipate needing support or Care Closet items during our closure, please be sure to reach out to us before Friday, August 21, at 6:00 p.m. so our volunteers have time to assist you before we close. After 6:00 p.m., our volunteers will be unavailable to respond to messages or requests until we return on September 8.

As a fully volunteer-run organization, PAACT relies on the time, energy, and availability of the amazing people who volunteer behind the scenes.

It has been a very busy summer for our little team, and we are ready for a short, much-needed break to rest and recharge! We will also be using this time to tackle some important behind-the-scenes PAACT work and prepare for our biggest event of the year—our Second Chances, Second Treasures Garage Sale on Saturday, August 29. With September just around the corner, this break will also give our volunteers some time to settle back into school, work, and their regular fall routines before we jump back into things!

During this time, our regular programs, request processing, pickups, and general communications will be paused. Messages and requests received during our closure will still be there when we get back, and our volunteers will begin working through everything once we return. You will still see the occasional post on our social media as we get closer to our Garage Sale fundraiser!

We know that taking a break can be difficult when there are always animals and people who need support, but giving our volunteers time to step away is an important part of making sure PAACT can continue showing up for our community in a sustainable and imPAACTful way.
