One of the most crucial times to monitor for surgery is recovery! Making sure the patient wakes up smoothly and breathing well on it's own is very important to us. A registered veterinary technician monitors the patient's breathing, heart rate, temperature, capillary refill time, gingiva colour, and pain control after surgery until the owner comes to pick them up to make sure they are comfortable and stable before going home. Another thing we do is monitor the incision (if any) and make sure there is no swelling, excessive bleeding, or large bruising. ๐Ÿฉธ
We take every pet's health very seriously and do not take it lightly the trust that you have put on us by allowing us to care for your pet. They are loved at home and at the clinic! The pets we see get lots of attention, pets and treats to make sure they are feeling as calm and happy as possible. Thank you for your trust ๐Ÿ’•๐Ÿถ๐Ÿฑ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿปโ€โš•๏ธ

Although it looks a bit wet out there (woohoo!!! โ˜”) the warm weather is here and that means... So are the bugs! This month we will be going over different parasites that you need to watch for when it comes to your pet!

Today we will talk about ticks ๐Ÿชฒ๐Ÿ˜

Ticks are arachnids that feed off the blood of their host, which can be yourself or your pets. They attach to the host and feed slowly, so it can take several days for them to finish their meal.
Ticks cannot jump or fly, so they typically wait for potential hosts to pass by them and then crawl on them. This is known as questing. Long grass is usually a good place to get ticks on you.

Ticks can pass infectious diseases to their hosts which is why they are so dangerous. Some ticks to be mindful of are:
-American Dog Tick
- Lone Star Tick
- Blacklegged Tick
- Brown Dog Tick
- Longhorned Tick

How can you prevent your pets from ticks you might ask?

Talking to your veterinarian about prevention medication for your pet. They will go over your dogs risk life-style factors and work together with you to pick the best one for them. We also recommend thoroughly combing through their fur after being outside. They do tend to hide on the host, so spots like behind the ears, under the armpits, or between the toes.

If you do find a tick on your pet that is already attached, you need to take it off carefully to reduce the chances of the tick releasing disease agents into the pet. Using a tick key or a comb (fine-toothed) is a good tool to use. Make sure to pull the tick out straight and if you want to send it off for free-testing, place the tick in a container. You can bring it to your local veterinarian and they can send it off to E-tick and then let you know if the tick was transmitting any diseases.

Some not-so-fun facts about ticks:
1. Females can deposit about 3000-6000 eggs
2. Some ticks can be active if temperatures are above 0ยฐ
3. Some can transmit Lyme disease
4. Lone Star Tick can cause Alpha-gal Syndrome, a potentially life-threatening allergy to red meat and animal products
5. Some adult ticks can live 2-3 years without feeding

If you have any questions about ticks and prevention, give us a call!

Uh oh! Looks like someone got into some chocolate! ๐Ÿซ

Thankfully the owners were on top of it and brought the patient in immediately to induce vomiting to avoid possible toxicity! ๐Ÿคฎ

After a history was collected and an efficient exam performed, we gave the patient a dose of Apomorphine to induce vomiting. We sit with the patient and place a bib over her to avoid any messes on her fur and wait for the magic (puke) to happen. Then one of the technicians or veterinarians gets the fun job of looking through the puke to make sure that the toxin has been puked up. Once she stops producing any vomit we give her an injection of anti-nausea medication to help her feel better! ๐Ÿค•

Things like this happen often, and even the most diligent of owners are no match for a dog with a dream and a delicious chocolate in sight. We are here to help! If you think your animal got into anything that they shouldn't have and don't know what to do you can give us a call! โ˜Ž๏ธ

If you would like to know more about things to avoid, you can go onto the ASPCA Poison Control website to see the different foods, plants, household products, and seasonal toxins to avoid! โ˜ฃ๏ธ

Common food items to avoid are: chocolate, grapes, onions, avocados, xylitol, and nuts! But there are many more! Information is power, and we encourage all pet owners to research possible toxins to avoid for their pets! ๐ŸŒฐ๐Ÿฅ‘๐Ÿซ๐Ÿ‡๐Ÿง…

Maybe this is what cuteness overload feels like ๐Ÿ’•

They already have the most perfect names, but if you had to name these identical felines what would you choose? ๐Ÿค”๐ŸŒŒ

Had a FANTASTIC day collecting donations for the

We welcomed in 10 dogs today, 5 of them being brand new donors, and they all did SO well!! ๐Ÿ’‰

There were up to 27 dogs saved through the donations we collected today, and 3 of these dogs were universal donors, meaning they can donate to all dog blood types! incredible! ๐Ÿฆธ๐Ÿผโ€โ™‚๏ธ

A huge thank you and shout out to these amazing dogs and their owners who gave up their time and blood to help those in need ๐Ÿ’•

Don't worry, we will be hosting more of these in the future if you are sad you missed out! ๐Ÿ—“๏ธ

Sad you missed it? Don't worry! We plan on doing more of these, because there is ALWAYS a need for blood! Blood can be used for many things; surgery, cancer therapy support, rat poison toxicity, anemia, immune-mediated disease and more! ๐Ÿฉธ

If you are interested in signing up your dog, (they have to be bigger than 25kg), give us a call! We would love to answer your questions and get your dog on his superhero origin story ๐Ÿ“–
