Some different feathers from our chickens and guineas. 1st is a tail feather from our mixed rooster. Next is a guinea fowl feather followed by an old english game hen feather then an Ayam Cermani feather. The last two are a mature serama and a week old seramas feather. LOOK at the tiny size of that baby feather. Gave me inspiration for this post when I found it.

It's been a while since we had an introduction.

Meet Norma. This angel was born to a new mama that didn't want to be a mama. She was left to die (sometimes the instict just isn't there). I found her at 630am that morning frozen solid. Literally. Cold to the touch, legs straight and body firm solid. Eyes closed and it seemed death at definetely occured. Couldn't feel a pulse and there was zero movement. Walking to bury baby with baby in my hand I felt the tiniest pulse. Still, baby looked "gone" - 100%. I immediately got into my car and cranked the heat. Held her in a fist with the hot air blowing on my hand so as to not burn her.

I was late for work by this time so Norma came with to my office. En route, her pulse strengthened. It took approx 2 hours before she could stand and longer than that before she ate (a colleague had cooked egg for brunch- thank heavens!). By noon, Norma was eating, drinking, walking (running) and chirping up a storm.

This was 6 months ago.

Today, Norma is one of our smartest chickens (who ever would have thought! After what I thought would cause some degree of brain damage??) She is a wee bit cranky (even though she was hand-held so much- *a first for us* all of our hand held birds are pet friendly)

And by the grace of God she is healthy as can be and oh so gorgeous!

AND.. she doesn't like the rest of flock much. She also doesn't get bullied. Just happily independent.

SERAMA CHECKLIST:

🐓 Lives for 7+ years if taken care of with love;
🐔 Weighing under 19oz if purebred;
🌈 Comes in many different color combinations included black, white, caramel, brown, exchequer etc.;
🥚 Laying 4-5 eggs per week less the times they stop laying to naturally rest;
🥚 Eggs are usually white to a darker cream;
🐣 Extremely good with children and each other;
🐔can be a broody breed for sure. They are the BEST- most protective and absolutely instinctive mamas EVER. A lot like a silkie mama but not as snuggly...
