June 8, 2026 – The ticks submitted to E-Tick Canada were identified as Dermacentor species. These ticks are not known to transmit the bacteria that causes Lyme disease, but they can transmit other diseases, including those associated with Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever (also referred to as New World Spotted Fever or tick-borne typhus), Q fever, and babesiosis, among others. In humans, Dermacentor species may also be associated with tick paralysis, which is caused by a neurotoxin transmitted during feeding on blood.

Tick exposure remains a concern for both pets and people. Maintaining effective tick prevention for your pet is one of the most reliable ways to reduce the risk of tick-borne diseases.

Tick season is definitely here in Leduc. A few days ago, we had 2 different pet owners bring in ticks they found attached to their dogs.

With the warmer weather and more people out walking trails, visiting parks, heading to the lake, or spending time in the yard, we’re starting to see more ticks showing up around the Leduc area. A lot of pets pick them up during completely routine outings, not just camping or hiking trips. 🐾

Now’s a good time to get into the habit of checking your dog after being outdoors, especially around the ears, neck, armpits, paws, and between the toes.

If you find a tick:
• Remove it as soon as possible with tweezers or a tick remover
• Try not to squeeze or crush it
• Watch for signs like lethargy, limping, fever, decreased appetite, or swelling at the bite site
• Keep your pet on consistent tick prevention throughout the season.

Most owners don’t think much about ticks until they physically find one attached. By then, exposure has already happened, which is why prevention is so important.
