Chin rest is a super fun and easy skill to teach your puppy - especially if they might grow up to be a future service dog!

This skill is super useful!

It can be used in cooperative care, vet exams and body handling! For example, you ask your puppy for a chin rest before examining their ears.

It is also a foundation skill to retrieving objects. This helps them learn to place it in your hand.

Also. It’s just so cute.

Touch is seriously one of the most useful skills you can teach your puppy. It has so many applications!

Especially if your puppy is a biter, teaching “touch” gives them a new way of interacting with your hand without biting you.

You are at the same time reinforcing a more appropriate behaviour!

This tutorial is the foundation skill that we will eventually practice in moments when they bite.

Guys! We need to brush our dog’s teeth!

One skill that’s often over-looked is body handling.

Puppies are sponges and so much more willing to engage in these activities especially when we do it slowly and make it super fun.

It leads to a life time of stress free grooming and veterinary care!

First I taught Sheba to place her muzzle into my hand.

Then I introduce the toothbrush with veterinarian approved toothpaste and let her lick it off.

The third step is having her place her puzzle in my hand while I hold the toothbrush.

And finally start brushing 1 stroke at a time.

The key? Going slow and using all the yummy treats to make this exercise super fun for your puppy.

Hey friends!

It’s been a while since I introduced myself and with so many new friends here, I think it’s time!

My name is Katherine and I am a professional dog trainer, dog mom and mama to 3 tiny humans who are all under the age of 6 🥹. It gets pretty busy around here! So why not add a puppy!

Sheba is my new partner in crime. She is a 7 month old Smooth Collie in training to be my work dog.
As my work dog, she will accompany me to my classes, socialize puppies and help me with clients. So far, she’s doing one heck of a job! But above all, she is the family pup and she takes her roll very seriously. She’s an incredible sister to her little humans.

I have over 11 years experience with many certifications including the academy for dog trainers CTC, certified separation anxiety trainer (CSAT) and I am a Service Dog Coach (SDC). And our future here at Dog Inspired is focused mostly on service dog training; with lots of new projects coming in the next few weeks!

I’m from Montreal 🇨🇦

In my spare (rare) time, I enjoy doing yoga, being outside and being with my little family ❤️

If you’re thinking of training your puppy to be a future service dog, this is for you.

1: Don’t put a service dog vest on them. They are not a service dog and impersonating one hurts real service dogs. It also doesn’t mean your allowed into non pet friendly spaces. A vest also does not guarantee your puppy will become your service dog. Only time will tell!

Instead, I use a general « training » harness or bandana to help keep people away from us while we are out. (It actually works so well)

2. An untrained dog - and puppy, will most likely be disruptive to other around you. They need to have solid skills before doing true public access work and this isn’t the priority with a young dog.

Many places are pet friendly and offer amazing opportunities for socializing and training your future service dog.

3. Keep outings short and sweet. Focus on making it fun and positive. Puppies also have a short attention span and short spurts of energy. So we want to use that time to focus on building good skills and associations without exhausting them.

4. Task training can be done later on. Prioritize socialization, confidence building, and good manners. Especially if you have finite time and energy!

5. Don’t wait until puppy is fully vaccinated to go out and socialize. But also be smart about where you bring your puppy. High traffic areas of dogs like the dog park is not recommended. And neither is spaces where there’s risk of disease from wild animals (think small ponds)

Your puppy is soaking up everything and this is the time where they are curious and out going, making it easier to create those positive experiences. Puppy classes, people watching and pet friendly stores are what we did with Sheba!

Raising a future service dog is a lot of work, but also such a rewarding process!

Not all dogs make it to the end and being proactive during puppyhood gives us our best chances of success!

If you raised a puppy, what was one thing you wish you did differently?

I wish I was consistent with practicing certain skills at home, like no jumping and manners in the kitchen and if I could go back in time, I would make it a point to practice social skills with other puppies. Proper greetings and polite play.

As a puppy expert, I encourage you to invest in your puppy’s future. It’ll make the next 15 years the best years of your life.
