🩺 🧡 Hey Cat Parents! Let’s Chat About Bobcat Fever: An Important Heads-Up

Just your friendly neighborhood vet team popping in with a quick heads-up about something called Bobcat Fever (aka cytauxzoonosis), a serious tick-borne disease that affects cats in many parts of the country.

While bobcats are natural carriers and usually show no signs, domestic cats can become very ill if infected through a tick bite — most commonly from the Lone Star tick and the American Dog Tick.

Signs to watch for:
-High fever
-Sudden lethargy and weakness
-Loss of appetite
-Jaundice (yellowing of the gums or eyes)
-Rapid or difficult breathing
-Pale gums

This illness can progress quickly, so early veterinary attention is very important. If your cat shows any of the symptoms above, please contact your veterinarian right away. Time matters with this disease.

How to Protect Your Cat:
-Use a veterinarian-recommended tick preventative year-round in endemic areas
-Keep cats indoors when possible, especially during peak tick season
-Perform regular tick checks after time outdoors
-Your cat’s idea of adventure probably shouldn’t include wrestling ticks, right? 😼
