was formed in 1993 when a group of animal lovers wanted a shelter for animals that were homeless. We provide shelter for stray, abandoned and unwanted cats in a safe, loving, cage free environment. There is a no kill policy at C.A.R.E.S., therefore any animals that are not adopted will be able to live the rest of their natural lives at the shelter. In February of 1998, C.A.R.E.S. Cats that are rescued, receive quality food, shelter and veterinary care and many of those cats are then taken to the PetSmart adoption centre in the Langley store. From February 1998 to December 2011, we have adopted out over 5400 cats from that location. As a small, non-profit organization we rely on our community of volunteers to help us keep the shelter clean and the cats well loved. Our volunteers assist with adoptions at PetSmart as well as cleaning, caring for the cats, fostering cats and kittens and generally providing love and protection for abused, injured, hungry, lost and abandoned animals. is funded entirely through memberships, adoption fees, fundraising events and the generous tax-deductible donations of caring individuals and corporations. is a non-profit Society and a registered Charity. Meet Cheesy. This handsome boy was abandoned and left to fend for himself. For years, he survived on his own, one of so many cats who are simply left behind and forgotten.

Cheesyโ€™s story is heartbreaking, but sadly, it isnโ€™t unique.
There are cats who are abandoned when their families move, cats who are left behind when someone can no longer care for them, and cats who spend years outside, hungry, scared and alone. Cats who once belonged to someone, but somehow became invisible.

This year, we walk for Cheesy, and for all the other cats left behind like him. โค๏ธ

This year marks our 23rd Annual Walk For The Cats, our BIGGEST fundraiser of the year! Every step, every pledge and every donation helps CARES rescue cats who have been abandoned, neglected or simply forgotten, and gives them the care, safety and second chance they deserve.

And donโ€™t worry the 5 km walk is not mandatory! You can walk part of the route, hang back and cheer on the walkers, or simply spend the afternoon with our wonderful volunteers.

๐Ÿงก CHEESY NEEDS A LITTLE HELP

For possibly a couple of years, Cheesy lived outside an apartment complex in South Langley. We don't know how he ended up there, or how long he had been fending for himself, but thankfully, he wasn't completely alone.

Over the past year, our amazing Kitty Kisser Victoria and her neighbours began caring for him, bringing him food and slowly earning his trust. And Cheesy clearly remembered them, whenever they arrived to feed him, he would rush over to see them. โค๏ธ

That told us something important: Cheesy wasn't a cat who wanted to live alone. He was a social boy who had simply been forgotten.

On Saturday, Victoria was finally able to trap him and bring him into CARES. When we saw him, we knew he needed help right away. His ears were so badly infested with mites that we rushed him to the vet first thing Sunday morning. Since then, he has been neutered, had a much-needed ear cleaning, flea treatment and a good bath. He is already feeling so much better!

Cheesy is estimated to be somewhere between 5โ€“10 years old and appears to have been surviving on his own for a very long time. And unfortunately, he still has a long road ahead. ๐Ÿ’”
Cheesy needs an extensive dental, including his neutering, ear care and all his needs the total estimate could be around $2,000. Depending if he needs multiple teeth removed. For a small, volunteer run shelter like CARES, unexpected medical cases like this can be a huge financial burden. But after everything this sweet boy has endured, we don't want dental pain to be one more thing he has to live with.

He spent years being forgotten. Now it's our turn to show him he is worth fighting for. โค๏ธ

Meet Jujube, thereโ€™s something truly magical about this little lady. This gorgeous two year old black cat is a little panther with bright, striking and impossible to forget eyes!

But behind those majestic eyes is the sweetest little charmer. Jujube has really come out of her shell, and now that sheโ€™s feeling more confident, her sweet, chatty and outgoing personality is shining through.

She loves pets, loves to play, and will happily keep you company with her gentle little conversations.

Jujube may need a little time to settle into a new home, but once she feels safe and comfortable, sheโ€™ll reward you with affection, playfulness and all the love her little heart has to give.

She does well with other cats and would be happiest in a calm, peaceful home without small children or dogs where she can continue to blossom at her own pace.

This beautiful little panther has the eyes of an ancient warrior and the heart of a sweetheart. ๐Ÿ–ค
