Goldstream Honey Works

Goldstream Honey Works Pure at its core, bee-loved in every drop โ€” whether in a jar, a balm, or a bar. My passion for beekeeping was introduced to me by my family at an early age.

We visited my Uncle Keith and Aunty Dorothy in Northern Saskatchewan when I was about 5 or 6 years old. The picture you see is me and my Uncle showing a frame of honey we had collected. Today fast forward to Goldstream Honey Works.

Did you know there's a local beekeeper at Royal Bay every Sunday? ๐Ÿ

Many people are surprised to discover there is a working apiary right here on the West Shore.

I'm Karen, the beekeeper behind Goldstream Honey Works. Every Sunday you'll find me at the Royal Bay Artisan Market, held alongside the Royal Bay Swap & Shop, where I love meeting neighbours, talking about bees, and sharing local honey.

If you haven't discovered the Artisan Market yet, come by and say hello.

โ€œNectar is too complex and variable for a narrow definition of quality with a strictly energetic focus: the energy from sugar, while crucial, is not the only benefit to pollinators.โ€ [1]

Nectar is much more than a simple sugar source. Although it is dominated by sugars and generally contains lower concentrations of nutrients than pollen, nectar also includes amino acids, lipids, proteins, organic acids, minerals, and other compounds. These components, though minor, can still influence pollinator health, disease susceptibility, and foraging behavior [2].

๐Ÿ Whatโ€™s happening in the hive this week? Nectar flow season is beginning on Southern Vancouver Island. ๐ŸŒฟ

Over the past few weeks, the bees have been working big leaf maple, arbutus, and early garden blooms like salvia. Now the blackberry blossoms are just beginning to open โ€” one of the biggest nectar flows of the season for local beekeepers.

A fun beekeeper fact: warm sunny weather helps blackberry nectar rise higher within the flower, making it much easier for honey bees to access. After several cold and rainy days, the hives are suddenly becoming very busy again.

This is the time of year when the colonies truly come alive and the 2026 honey season begins to take shape. ๐Ÿ’›
