We have been receiving an increased number of calls regarding suspected Canine Parvovirus cases in the Lacombe area. We want to help ensure accurate information is available to our community and that pet owners know how to protect their dogs.
Canine Parvovirus is a highly contagious and potentially life-threatening viral disease, particularly in puppies and unvaccinated dogs. Unfortunately, it is something we see far too often. Infection can cause severe vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration, and rapid deterioration, and can become fatal without prompt veterinary care.
Parvovirus spreads easily through contaminated f***s and can be carried on shoes, hands, clothing, surfaces, and other objects. The virus is also very resilient and can survive in the environment for extended periods of time, making exposure difficult to avoid completely.
Vaccination is the best way to protect your dog!! Puppies require a series of vaccinations to develop reliable protection, followed by regular booster vaccinations throughout their lives. Until a puppy has completed their initial vaccine series, it is important to take extra precautions about where they go and what they come into contact with.
Avoid areas where unknown or unvaccinated dogs may have been and limit contact with potential contaminated environments to help reduce your puppy’s risk.
If you have questions about your pet’s vaccination status or are concerned about possible exposure to Parvovirus, please contact your veterinary team. Prevention and early veterinary care can make a significant difference.
