Megan was at the CNE performing with her amazing Super Dogs. ❤️

🏫🎒 BACK TO SCHOOL & BACK TO WORK BLUES… FOR OUR PETS TOO! 🐾

Summer means more family time, vacations, late mornings, backyard adventures and lots of extra attention for our pets. ☀️🐶🐱

Then suddenly… the house gets quiet again. Everyone heads back to school and work, and our pets may wonder, “Where did everybody go?!”

Some pets adjust quickly, while others can struggle with the change in routine and may develop signs of stress or separation anxiety.

HELP YOUR PET TRANSITION SMOOTHLY:

🐾 Get back into a routine
Start reintroducing regular wake-up, meal, walk and bedtime schedules before school/work begins.

🐾 Practice short absences
If your pet has gotten used to someone being home all day, gradually increase the amount of time they spend alone.

🐾 Keep them mentally busy
Puzzle feeders, food-stuffed toys, sniffing games and safe enrichment activities can help keep their brains occupied while you're away.

🐕 Exercise before you leave
A walk, play session or some mental enrichment can help your pet burn off energy and settle more comfortably.

🐾 Create a comfortable “safe space”
Give your pet a cozy area where they can relax undisturbed. Familiar bedding and comforting scents can help.

🐾 Keep departures & arrivals calm
Try not to make leaving or coming home a huge emotional event. Calm, predictable interactions can make transitions easier.

🐾 Watch for signs of stress
Excessive barking or meowing, destructive behaviour, house-soiling, pacing, panting, changes in appetite or becoming unusually clingy can all be signs that your pet is struggling.

🐾 And remember: These behaviours are your pets communicating that they're having a hard time with the change.

If your pet is having significant difficulty adjusting, talk to your veterinary team. There are many ways we can help make the transition easier and reduce stress.

In recent months we have seen an increase in tooth fractures in our canine patients, majority of them caused by inappropriate chews!

🦷 Bully Sticks, Collagen Sticks, Bones and Antlers: What's safe?

We LOVE that you want to give your pets something to chew but not all chews are created equal! 🐶🦴

Bully Sticks
Bully sticks are made from beef muscle tissue and are generally more flexible than other chews. They can be a better option for satisfying your dog's natural urge to chew, when appropriately sized and supervised. This we LIKE!

Collagen Sticks
Collagen chews are made from collagen-rich animal tissue and are often marketed as a healthier alternative to traditional rawhide. However, some collagen sticks can be quite hard, especially as they dry out. This we DON'T like.

Bones and Antlers:
Bones and Antlers are extremely hard and will wear and fracture teeth. Cooked bones can additionally splinter and cause serious injuries if swallowed.

⚠️ Here's the dental concern:
A chew that is harder than your dog's teeth can fracture a tooth. Collagen sticks, bones and antlers may become hard enough to cause painful tooth fractures, particularly in dogs who are aggressive or powerful chewers.

🦷 A fractured tooth can lead to:
• Significant pain
• Infection
• An abscess
• The need for dental treatment or extraction

And remember "natural" doesn't automatically mean "risk-free." Every dog is different, and what is appropriate for a small, gentle chewer may not be appropriate for a powerful .

Always supervise your pet with any chew and choose an appropriate size for their weight and chewing style.

There’s nothing better than a sunny day at the beach with your best four-legged friend! 🐶☀️ But before your pup dives into the fun, keep these beach safety tips in mind:

🌊 Watch the water: Not all dogs are strong swimmers. Keep an eye on your pet around lakes, rivers, and ocean water, and consider a properly fitted life jacket for swimming or boating.

🔥 Protect those paws: Sand can become extremely hot! Test the sand with the back of your hand before letting your pet walk on it. If it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for their paws.

☀️ Provide shade & breaks: Pets can overheat quickly, especially brachycephalic breeds, seniors, overweight pets, and those with underlying health conditions. Keep beach time shorter during the hottest part of the day.

🪝 Beware of beach hazards: Hooks, fishing line, broken shells, garbage, and other debris can cause painful injuries or intestinal blockages if swallowed.

🦠 Rinse after swimming: A good rinse with fresh water helps remove sand, algae, pollen and other irritants from your pet’s skin and coat.

🚨 Know the signs of heat stress: Excessive panting, drooling, weakness, vomiting, diarrhea, confusion, or collapse are emergencies. Get your pet into a cool area and seek veterinary care immediately.

Found Cat!

Hey Friends,
One of our RVT's found this handsome fella on her run this morning. He is in rough shape and appears to have been out on his own for quite some time.

He is a friendly, adult, neutered male with no microchip found at the end of Victoria road in Point Clark.

If anyone is missing this sweet face please contact us via Facebook as our clinic is closed this week.

He is being cared for.

This sweetie is Cloudy, he is an intact young male cat. No microchip. He has been missing since Tuesday from Broadway St in Kincardine.
He currently has a Lion Cut hair cut due to some matting.
