Wise Earth Farm is located at KLO and the Mission Greenway in Kelowna, BC. We grow a variety of vegetables using organic principles and french intensive methods. Our produce is sold at farmers markets,to restaurants, and through a CSA weekly box program.

Tools we use on our small-scale farm (part 11): the flail mower!

The flail mower is an implement for the BCS walk-behind tractor that uses a rotating drum fitted with metal blades to chop up thick/dense plant material.

Unlike a rototiller, it doesn’t turn or invert the topsoil.

The blades work at the soil surface, leaving behind finely shredded organic matter that can break down and feed soil microbiology.

A great way to manage large amounts of crop residue, overgrown vegetation, and cover crops while keeping soil disturbance to a minimum.

After flail mowing, we will usually cover the beds with a tarp for 1-2 weeks before planting a new crop.

So much to love about September. Somehow everything seems to speed up and slow down all at once. Summer crops reach their peak and then meet their end that’s been rising for months.

All of the thought, time, intention, and care that we’ve poured into the field pours fruit back out to us. Ripe, ready, then gone.

Crossing paths with the return of fall crops bringing back what their season calls for. Cool mornings, refreshing relief, dark nights, anticipation of stillness, filled with wonder for what’s to come.

Using tarps is one of main ways we build organic matter in the soil and prepare our beds for the next crop.

After a crop has been terminated/fully harvested, we intentionally leave behind all the weeds and plant residue (root tops, outer leaves, unmarketable crops) in the beds.

We cover it all with a tarp to create an environment where soil micro-organisms can thrive and do their work.

For larger, thicker crops (like cauliflower, broccolini, kale stems), we will flail mow before tarping.

Under the dark, warm, moist conditions, micro-organisms break down the organic material into simpler compounds.

Earthworms (and other organisms) will then incorporate those compounds back into the topsoil.

Over time, this supports soil biology by retaining organic matter, rather than letting it oxidize away or blow/wash off (as happens with tillage).

When we remove the tarp after a few weeks, the surface is mostly clean of living weeds and the green plant materials have softened/yellowed/decomposed.

The beds are almost ready to plant into with minimal or no further disturbance. At this stage, all we need to do is rake off the leftover material, add compost, and transplant the next crop 🌱
