The Kelowna Veterinary Hospital is a full-service hospital committed to providing professional care and service combining old-world values with up-to-date procedures and medicine. We have a caring staff that will serve your needs and that of your pets with knowledge and compassion. Established in 1946 and re-built in its present location by Dr Coughlin in 1981, this is Kelowna's first and oldest veterinary hospital. Recently Ellen Nicklassen (who has been with the clinic for 18 years!) has taken over and is busy revamping the clinic to serve you better! All of our staff receive continuing education every year to ensure that our health care is current with new ideas and research.

🐾 A QUICK NOTE ABOUT KENNEL COUGH 🐾

We’ve been seeing an increase in dogs showing signs of respiratory illness, so we wanted to share a little information about kennel cough and what pet owners should watch for.

Kennel cough is a highly contagious respiratory infection that can spread anywhere dogs are in close contact with one another, including daycare, boarding facilities, dog parks, grooming salons, training classes, and even during casual interactions with other dogs.

It can also spread through shared water dishes, toys, surfaces, or areas where an infected dog has coughed, sneezed, licked, or left respiratory secretions behind.

Common signs can include:

• A dry, hacking or “honking” cough
• Gagging or retching after coughing
• Sneezing
• Nasal discharge
• Watery eyes
• Reduced energy
• Decreased appetite
• Fever in some cases

Many dogs remain bright and happy despite having a cough, but some infections can become more serious, particularly in puppies, senior dogs, or dogs with underlying health concerns.

If your dog develops a cough, please keep them away from other dogs and contact your veterinary clinic for advice.

If you are bringing your dog to Kelowna Veterinary Hospital and they are coughing, hacking, sneezing frequently, or have nasal discharge, please leave them safely in your vehicle when you arrive and call us from the parking lot. This allows our team to take appropriate precautions and helps protect other patients visiting the hospital.

Vaccination, including the Bordetella vaccine, can help reduce the risk and severity of some causes of kennel cough, although no vaccine can completely protect against every respiratory infection.

🦷 OCTOBER IS DENTAL MONTH AT KVH 🐾

Dental health is about so much more than fresh breath. Keeping your pet’s teeth and gums healthy can help prevent pain, infection, and other health concerns down the road.

Throughout October, we’re offering FREE dental estimates for your pet.

If your pet does need a dental procedure and you book it on the same day as their estimate, you’ll receive 10% off their dental.

If you’ve noticed bad breath, tartar, red gums, difficulty chewing, or you’re simply not sure what’s going on in your pet’s mouth, bring them in and let us take a look.

Veterinary medicine can be a little chaotic… okay, a lot chaotic. 😂🐾

But somewhere between the appointments, emergencies, phone calls and never-ending to-do lists, we still manage to have a bit of fun.

Sometimes teamwork looks like saving lives.

Sometimes it looks like cleaning the hospital.

And sometimes it looks like someone accidentally scheduling Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum together. 🐥😂

Kelowna Veterinary Hospital will be closed on Wednesday, September 30 in recognition of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

We will reopen with our regular hours on Thursday, October 1.

If your pet requires emergency veterinary care while we are closed, please contact Fairfield Animal Hospital.
