Tourism matters to Kenora. Visitors matter. Our events, our lake, our summers and the people who come here to experience them matter.
But they can’t be the entire foundation of a thriving small-town economy. Because what happens on a random Tuesday in November?
What happens when the boats are out of the water, the tourists have gone home and there isn’t a festival happening?
That’s when local businesses need us.
The person who lives six minutes away grabbing a coffee. The family choosing dinner downtown.
The friend who needs a birthday gift. The person booking an appointment, picking up something they need, or simply deciding to wander into a local shop instead of ordering online.
Small businesses don’t just need people to like them. They need people to use them. And I think there’s something worth asking ourselves as a community:
Have we built a downtown and a local economy that Kenora residents actually want to be part of their everyday lives?
Because a packed long weekend feels amazing. But rent still comes Monday. Payroll still comes Monday. Bills still come Monday. And there are a whole lot of ordinary Tuesdays between those big weekends.
So yes — come visit Kenora. Bring your friends. Bring your family. Spend the weekend here. Experience everything our little town has to offer.
But if you live here, don’t wait for a special occasion to support the businesses you say you want to keep.
Shop here. Eat here. Get your coffee here. Book the appointment. Buy the gift. Try the new place. Come downtown on a random Tuesday.
Because tourism can add to a healthy small-town economy. It shouldn’t have to rescue one.
And if we want Kenora to have the vibrant downtown, restaurants, shops and small businesses we’re always talking about wanting…
we have to make them part of our normal lives — not just our summer plans.
