Some training needs luring, some training they just do on their own and you can name it and then there's other training where you have them think. Might take days a week but the thought process is that you have a goal in mind and they have to figure it out. If you want a tired dog this is what you need to do to train. Now sometimes I do this with simple commands like sit, come, down and other times it's to train a trick or something that has multiple steps. I hope you enjoy watching Millie.

Do you let your dogs play like dogs? I do. How long is long enough? My thought is less than a couple of minutes at a time. I stop the play and release them. If they come back to each other and start again I stop them after less time. Then I will distract each of them with some commands. If they come back to each other a third time I will allow it keeping an eye. This time will be the last time because when I stop them I place them in a down. I find it stops exuberance and locking in behaviour by keeping play time short.

This is true tired. We were out in nice cool weather on a hike. The dogs were off leash in the park getting all the sniffs. I walked 3 kms so I'm sure they both walked 5 kms. Once we got back to the trailer I trained with each of them separately for 5 mins. Exercise the body and the mind. A tired dog is a happy dog.

Sniffs, smells and brain work. This is getting to know the environment, this is socializing, this is hunting. Take your dog's outside and let them be dogs. Whether they are on leash, longline or e-collar these exercises give them the type of enrichment their brain needs.

Hunting is a primal urge in all dogs. From your Chihuahua to your Boerboel, your Cocker spaniel to your Great Dane. If you go out in your backyard and toss food around and put it on lawn chairs and under tables and just create a maze out of their food in the morning when they're hungry they'll hunt. Using their nose to sniff out their breakfast will entertain you and it will help your dog with the enrichment they need. We call it feeding the chickens here. Go feed your chickens!

Dogs don't care about the weather! If you're going to have a dog you shouldn't care about the weather either. Dogs need exercise whether it's sunny, raining, snowing or even if it's just overcast and warm. Make sure that your dog gets used to the weather in your area. It's important for them to be socialized to all weather. Let's not raise weather weenies as a good friend of mine once said! Take your dogs outside. 💙🐾

When you have more than one dog do you treat them exactly the same? The answer is no. Some people may disagree with me but that's the best answer I can give. All dog breeds were not created equally. Take for instance Millie. She has 3 different breeds in her 'pedigree'. Do all of them show up? Yes! So I enrich all of them whenever I can. Tommie is a paper in hand purebred Labrador retriever. I take him out and do things his breed loves for enrichment as well. Do some of the things I do with Millie overlap with Tommie? Sure! But Millie could care less about swimming and Tommie could care less about learning tricks. Get to know your dogs, their needs and their loves. Do with them what they love to do. Your relationship will change in a heartbeat.
