Zinnias can easily be seeded directly into the ground, but if you’re like me and can’t wait and want to get a head start, you can start them indoors - as long as you have a light source! A bright windowsill will not be enough.

Zinnias grow fast and they are sun lovers. If they don’t get enough light, they will be leggy and weak.

Just don’t start them too early! 2-3 weeks before planting outside is a good timeline to aim for.

The lights I’m using are 4 foot long LED Barrina shop lights from Amazon (I have no affiliation with this brand) but you can use any shop light or grow light with “daylight” colour light. The more lumens the better (brighter). Mine are 5000 to 5500 lumens.

This year I focused on producing a lot of seed for my pastel zinnias and it was really successful!

I had enough seed so that I didn’t sell out right away to my fellow Canadians (I’m so glad that everyone that had been waiting for seeds for so long was able to get what they wanted!) AND there is enough seed to re-stock the shop for the US (expected to be in January!).

And although the pastel zinnias are beautiful and really popular (check out my website to see the Peace and Hope mixes), my heart strings are being pulled by some of the more colourful and fun colours and shapes that appeared this past summer (pictured in this post).

I won’t ever give up my pastels, but how do you guys feel about wandering more into the colourful side of zinnias with me?
