A huge congratulations to Claire and Stevie on achieving the Elite title!
To achieve this, they must complete
a) Container Search of 16-20 containers with 2 to 4 hides
b) Interior Search of 2-3 rooms with 0 to 5 hides (you have to decide if you have found everything there is to find in one room before you can move to the next)
c) Exterior Search with 0 to 3 hides
all at the same trial. Hides can be up to 4 feet about a stable surface, or buried. Each search can contain up to 3 distractors (often yummy food).
The extra challenge at this level is that all 3 elements need to be passed at the same trial. One false alert, one missed hide and it's a not yet. I'm so proud of them for achieving this!

I was thrilled to get texts informing me that two students had achieved new SDDA Champion Titles in Scent Detection. Fern earned her Games Champion achieving her Speed, Distance and Arial titles and Kai achieved his Master Champion (requires 10 advanced/excellent titles, 3 of which have to be excellent titles, and 3 gold level scores). Kai also went to a Rally Obedience trial, finished his Advanced title and got 2 qualifying scores towards his Excellent title. Congratulations to you both! It's great to see your training and teamwork pay off.

Leave it should be a stand alone cue - not an add on. What do I mean by that? Often I see people teach leave it by having their dog sit, maybe also stay, then they say leave it and place the treat on the ground. While that does work on a dog's ability to sit/stay in the face of distraction, it's not actually teaching them to leave it when they haven't been given a task to do first. Therefore, not only do I start leave it training as a choice based game, I also purposefully introduce movement into the picture. In this exercise, Elementary Manners students are practicing leave it while their dogs are in motion, so that the dogs learn that even if they are walking around in the house if they hear the leave it cue they should not grab what they are looking at and check in with their person instead.
