🌎 World Rabies Day 🌎

September 28th is World Rabies Day, and was created with the intention of raising awareness and working together to eliminate rabies.

💉What is Rabies?
* A viral disease causing inflammation of the brain in humans and other mammals
* Rabies is fatal once symptoms appear
* Spread by bites, scratches or saliva
* Only diagnosed after symptoms appear
* Is present in over 150 countries and on all continents except Antarctica

💉How to reduce the risk of rabies:
* Vaccinating dogs, cats, and ferrets against rabies
* Keeping pets under supervision
* Not handling wild animals or strays
* Contacting an animal control officer upon observing a wild animal or a stray, especially if the animal is acting strangely
* If bitten by an animal, washing the wound with soap and water for 10 to 15 minutes and contacting a healthcare provider to determine if post-exposure prophylaxis is required

Vaccinating our pets is the best way to ensure that they are protected against rabies! If you have questions about vaccines or would like to book your pet in to get their vaccines up to date, give us a call at either our Agassiz location at 604-796-9555 or our at our Hope location at 604-869-9555.

🌽Corn and Pets🌽

Our neighbour Agassiz is the Corn Capital of BC, and we love our corn. But you know what doesn't love corn? Our pets stomachs. This sad looking dog thought that eating an ENTIRE COB OF CORN was a good idea. Spoiler alert, it was not a good idea, and nobody was happy, especially Mia's mom.

Despite being delicious, corn doesn't break down in our (or our pets) stomach acids. This means that whatever shape it enters a stomach is the shape that it stays. Unfortunately, this also means that if not chewed into small enough pieces, this can cause a blockage in the stomach or intestines which is an emergency and needs to be addressed immediately - either with your regular vet or an emergency clinic.

Thankfully, Mia was seen straight away by her wonderful doctors and is recovering well after multiple x-rays and abdominal surgery. Her mom would love to think that she wouldn't do something silly like this again, but knows that Mia would 100% do it again so full corn cobs are now banned from their household.
