Unfortunately our region is seriously deficient in Vit E which means even on pasture 24/7 the horses don’t get enough creating the need to supplement it in our horses diets.
Everybody here at Mossy Meadows receives MadBarn’s Natural E to keep them healthy and active.
Vitamin E deficiency in horses can cause muscle weakness, trembling, reduced performance and loss of muscle, particularly along the topline. Severe or prolonged deficiency can contribute to nerve damage, with signs such as poor coordination, stumbling or difficulty standing. Some horses have low vitamin E without obvious symptoms, and these signs can also have other causes, so a veterinary examination and blood test are needed to assess the problem.

📣 This week’s highlight: Vitamin E
“Horses getting less than 12 hours of high-quality pasture may not consume enough vitamin E to meet their needs. Requirements are even higher for horses in work, and inadequate vitamin E intake can contribute to several muscular and neurological diseases.”
— Dr. Eleanor Kellon, VMD, Veterinary Nutritionist
Vitamin E is an essential antioxidant with important roles in normal muscle function, neurological health, and immune function. Fresh pasture is the horse’s primary natural source, but vitamin E levels decline significantly once forage is harvested and stored as hay.
This means horses with limited or no access to fresh pasture may require supplemental vitamin E to meet their needs. Requirements can also increase with exercise, making vitamin E an important consideration for performance horses.
When supplementation is needed, look for natural vitamin E (d-alpha-tocopherol), which is more bioavailable than synthetic forms.
