Apparently Mother Nature read my reminder post about weather related cancellations and decided to say, ā€œWatch this!ā€ Because guess whose arena is flooded and more rain is coming down! This is why I am saving up for an indoor (also mostly crossing fingers at this point because horse poor is VERY real)!

Planning on lessons still going ahead, they’ll likely be unmounted and indoor ones! Mother Nature always keeps us on our toes and being creative! šŸ˜‚šŸ˜…

You do not have to know the answer to consider the question.

Somewhere along the line, many of us got scared about learning. In case we got the wrong answer and then got pulled in front of the class, maybe. Or, we got told off at home for failing the spelling test. Maybe we weren’t the kid in pony club who won rosettes and were in the metaphorical losers bin - and never want to feel like that again.

Which means, as adults, we have created all manner of strategies not to be exposed through the process of learning. The problem is, for anyone with a horse in their life, every day is a (home) school day! You don’t get to opt out.

Here is one strategy I see students and members (and my own brain) use to delay trying to work something out for ourselves. This is, to keep insisting more and more information is required before you can begin to contemplate the question. To want the answer, hard copied in triplicate, and on email, and maybe in a voice note with a certification that this is the absolute guaranteed correct solution. And sometimes, on the very rare occasion I can actually provide that, someone may still want that double marked by an independent verifier.

When our horse poses us a question (often a daily/hourly occurrence) rather than attempting to work it out for ourselves, we go looking for someone else’s gold stamped answer. Now for sure, it makes sense to seek out information and suggested solutions from all those other people and horses who’ve walked the path before you. That’s why we have teachers and read books.

However; a common avoidance habit in scared learners is to get stuck here and just keeping seeking more and more information, rather than going and exploring the question with a curiosity for what might show up.

The next time your horse asks you a question, if you recognise this pattern in yourself, maybe just take a beat. Before you sign up for that course, or ask someone else, or order a new book on the subject (my particular favourite) consider what you already know and what you’ve already tried. Very often someone may realise they haven’t actually tried very much at all.

You could, instead, just have a stab at answering the question for yourself. Because, these days, as a full grown human, no one is going to give an F for the wrong answer. You just get to do with the information what you will, and jettison the rest.

Happy Monday everyone!

September is almost here, and as you've likely all noticed we've had plenty of rain! Reminder that I do not cancel lessons for rain, the options are riding through it or if it's too much of a monsoon students can choose from the unmounted lesson topics.

Horses aren't just riding, and horsemanship is a lifelong practice. Learning about saddles, diet, care, and everything else related to keeping a horse healthy and happy is essential to becomming the best horse-person possible. Unmounted lessons aren't a consollation prize for not being ridden, often they are more integral to horse welfare than the riding themselves. Horses do not care if they are ridden, they can enjoy and enjoy time with us, but it is not something they *need* in their lives. Food, forage, friends, and movement are what their brains actively seek for daily satisfaction and survival.

Remember, if you want to compete on my horses and ponies (or others owners are gracious enough to let us borrow), I will remember attitudes or behaviours at all lessons. I do not believe in treating my animals like machines that pump out enjoyable experiences, they are beings who's care comes first and our riding experiences second. Which is something we should all care about, because if our horses don't feel their best, riding is likely not going to be as much fun.

Happy September Eve everyone, and see you at lessons soon!

This summer has been a whirlwind! A fun, tiring, awesome, and learning summer, and I can't believe we only have one full week of August left before it's September! After returning from PG on Saturday and a full day of lessons yesterday, I am slowly regaining my business bearings! If you haven't heard from me for lessons please reach out again, I am still in a bit of chaos so I am not getting back to you on purpose! I am just a slow organizer 🤣

Getting us all back on the same track, I've begun with getting my September calendar (as it currently stands!) done so I can start sharing with everyone! This week is still a bit jumbled with the fair happening (come out on Thursday to see myself and Finn, my friend Holly's mare who I've been working with, try out halter classes! It's Finn's fair debut and my sort of return, but first time doing halter classes as I've always wanted to try them and Holly has been gracious enough to give me helpful advice and tips!). The first week of September will also be a bit odd as the long weekend will be happening and I'll be taking that time to spend with my family and resting!

By the 8th we'll be back to mostly regular schedule, however, the fall NSC Horse Show will be taking place on the 18th, 19th, and 20th and I am hoping to be attending myself and with some students in tow!

September 22nd will also begin the next fall session of Hoof in Hand EAL, that I am fortunate enough to be participating in again! Sessions will occur on Tuesday's, Wednesday's, and Thursday's. Lessons will be able to be scheduled on these days depending on times.

Friday's will continue to be my day off with no lessons or activities scheduled to give me a day to decompress (I know, odd for a horse person but the 'tism requires it for sanity). EXCEPT for September 21st, which is a Monday after the horse show that I'll need to recover after.

I'll try to keep the calendar updated with any changes or shifts in schedules, hopefully that will be easier to do now that we're moving into all of us having more scheduled lives with school returning. October is in the works as well and I'll post as soon as I am done it!

Also, anyone else PUMPED for autumn! I am a fall girliešŸšŸ‚šŸ„

**Edited with extra paragraph, second to last!

Hello all, old and new friends!

My page has been getting quite a few more views recently (thanks for stopping by) and I've had more lesson requests. All of which is fabulous, but I wanted to make another quick post with some info!

WREN Equestrian is a one woman show for the most part, I have lots of great friends and students that help me out when they can, but for the actual business aspects it's down to lil' ol' me! That means I am the receptionist, the coach, the trainer, the stable/farm hand, the bookkeeper, and the billing department! Which is just par for the course when you're a small business operator, but it does mean that it can take me a while to get back to requests.

Furthermore, I've also instituted a new policy where prior to lessons I send potential new students my policies for things like missed or cancelled lessons, payment schedules, and more. It's also important that potential new students read this and that I know they did before we begin to avoid misunderstandings or confusion. This also makes things take a bit longer, but this business isn't one for instant gratification.

Along these lines, I also put the horses first. Currently onsite here we have 12 horses here between personal, lesson, and boarding horses. For one person, this is a lot of horses to keep up with. Sometimes I do not need to be as involved with the horses, but some days I am applying sunscreen to pink noses, putting on and taking of flysheets/fly masks, picking hooves, applying bug balm, cleaning and dressing wounds, cleaning/filling troughs, moving horses to new pasture, and feeding ontop of training schedules and lessons.

Outside of the business, I do also have a personal life (small though it is these days!). I love my business, but it can't be the only thing in my life as that isn't healthy.

I am always working to improve, and I also understand how frustrating waiting for replies can be. However, try to remember I am only one person much the same as anyone else. It's also perfectly fair for you to decide that waiting for me is not for you and to look elsewhere, I will never begrudge that. We're all just people trying to do our best, and sometimes things don't work out and that's a-okay!

I also want to say that you can also always revisit lessons or myself whenever. I very rarely hold grudges or cut off connections (community is very important to me, and that requires rebuilding relationships and connections after complications of any kind, much like our equine friends live their own lives). So if my lack of organization upsets you and you choose to discontinue lessons, but later decide you're still interested, that option is absolutely available. I very much believe that nearly any rift in connection can be rebuilt, and am always open to that option. We all have phases, and feelings, and sometimes space is what we need for that moment. The chance to comeback is always there

Just a quick reminder everyone that I am taking between July 18th-26th off from lessons etc. for some much needed R&R!

Today was a big day! Took a bit longer doing some of the morning chores before the kids got to ride, BUT we got to do one of my favourite activities with horses! Swimming or water crossings! In this case we rode into the pond so it was more of a crossing than a swim, but a few kids did get wet! Horses laid down, Daley went zooming through eating without a care in the world, Teddy scuba’d all around and carried every kid pretty much šŸ˜‚ Tater was a bit anxious but did fabulous for her first foray here into deeper water! Overall the horses and kids had a blast cooling off! Sadly didn’t get any action photos of that as I was wading to help out, hoping for some staff or more helpers next year so I can play photographer more!

Today the kids fed the horses their pony popsicle creations which since it’s a pretty warm day they were very appreciative of them! I’ve also discovered that for hot days I apparently just need to dunk my clothes and I can survive afternoon activities šŸ˜‚
