π¦π THANKSGIVING PET SAFETY: KEEP THE HOLIDAY HAPPY FOR EVERYONE! πΎ π€
Thanksgiving weekend is a time for family, friends, delicious food, and giving thanks for the furry family members who make our lives better! While we're enjoying the long weekend, there are a few things to keep in mind to help keep our pets safe, happy, and healthy.
π BE CAREFUL WITH TABLE SCRAPS!
Those begging eyes are hard to resist, but many Thanksgiving foods can upset your pet's stomach or even be dangerous.
π« Avoid:
β’ Turkey bones - these can splinter or cause choking, blockages, or intestinal injuries.
β’ Fatty foods, gravy, and skin - can trigger digestive upset or pancreatitis.
β’ Onions, garlic, and chives - can be toxic to dogs and cats.
β’ Chocolate, raisins, grapes, and desserts containing xylitol - can be toxic to pets.
ποΈ KEEP THE GARBAGE OUT OF REACH
Turkey carcasses, bones, string, foil, plastic wrap, and food-soiled packaging can all tempt curious noses. Secure your garbage and compost to prevent scavenging and accidental ingestion.
πΌ WATCH OUT FOR FALL DECORATIONS
Festive flowers, candles, potpourri, and seasonal decorations can pose risks. Lilies are especially dangerous to cats, and even small exposures can cause life-threatening kidney injury.
πͺ GUESTS, DOORS & STRESS
A busy house can be overwhelming for some pets. Frequent arrivals and departures also increase the risk of an accidental escape.
Make sure your pet has:
β’ A quiet, comfortable space to retreat to.
β’ Fresh water and access to their usual essentials.
β’ A secure collar with identification and up-to-date microchip information.
β’ Supervision around unfamiliar guests, children, and other animals.
π¨If you suspect your pet has eaten something dangerous or is showing concerning symptoms, contact an emergency veterinary hospital promptly!
We wish everyone a safe, happy, and healthy Thanksgiving weekend! π§‘ππΆπ±
