The Cat Clinic

The Cat Clinic The Cat Clinic is a fully functioning veterinary clinic in Hamilton, exclusively for feline patients.

Welcome to The Cat Clinic
Owned by one of the few board certified feline veterinary specialist in Ontario, The Cat Clinic is a full functioning animal hospital in Hamilton specifically for feline patients. Established in 1978, the veterinarians and staff at The Cat Clinic understand the special bond you share with your cat and we strive for compassionate high quality care. We've been around a lon

g time and our whole team is dedicated to staying up to date on current knowledge and techniques in feline medicine. At our hospital we encourage client participation in the decision making process and treat every patient as an individual with dignity and compassion, as if they were our own. Our hospital is equipped to provide your pet with routine medical care which includes Physical examination, laser therapy, digital radiography, ultrasound, dentistry and surgery as well as many other important services and emergency care should the need arise. Please feel free to visit the services section of our website for a more detailed listing. We are active in both community and national charity work supporting cats and their needs. Dr. O'Brien has volunteered her time to go all over the country championing Cat Healthy by creating awareness of responsible cat ownership. Locally we are the founders of the street cat program, this project partners with the hbspca to run a spay/neuter trap and release program for the local feral cats. This helps to control the feline populations, promotes keeping healthier cats and decreases fighting. We often have strays we have “cleaned up” that are in our hospital looking for a new home as well as providing care for several rescues. We also work with The Living Rock, an organization helping “youth at risk” by providing routine veterinary care for their pets. The Cat Clinic welcomes new clients, emergencies, second opinions, transfers and of course our regular clients.

As obligate carnivores, cats didn't need to develop a taste for carbohydrates. When they taste something sugary sweet, it doesn't come across as sweet in the way we would detect it with our taste buds.

Whisker Wisdoms Parasites - Although not as common, Hookworms and Whipworms are still a concern in our Feline Family Members

Hookworms

Hookworms are small parasites that attach to the intestinal lining in cats, feeding on blood. They can cause anemia, especially in kittens or weakened cats.
Cats get hookworms by ingesting larvae from contaminated soil or f***s, or through skin contact. Symptoms include weight loss, diarrhea, and a poor coat. Severe cases may show pale gums due to anemia.

Whipworms

Whipworms are slender parasites in the large intestine, causing irritation. Less common in cats, they still pose a risk.
Infections occur when cats ingest eggs from contaminated soil, food, or water. Symptoms include chronic diarrhea and weight loss, though many cats show no symptoms.

Prevent hookworms and whipworms with routine vet care and deworming. Keep the living area clean to reduce risk. Consult your vet for concerns and treatment options.

When you set up the litter box, make sure it truly is cat-friendly. So many times during consultations I would see set-ups that were designed for client appeal (meaning located in the most remote spot, too small for the cat, and rarely scooped). The litter box is such an important aspect of your cat's daily life and health, so be sure it measures up.

If you have a senior cat (11 years and older), any weight gain or unplanned weight loss warrants a visit to your veterinarian. Weight gain can lead to chronic diseases and a shorter lifespan, while weight loss often indicates a health issue. Read up on more ways to care for your senior cat at https://bit.ly/3LaeM7t.

Whisker Wisdoms Parasites - Tapeworms

Tapeworms are among the most common parasites that can infest cats, characterized by their long, segmented bodies that, when dry, resemble tiny grains of rice or sesame seeds. These parasites are typically acquired by cats through the ingestion of infected fleas or rodents, which serve as intermediate hosts in the tapeworm's lifecycle.

Symptoms of a tapeworm infestation in cats can vary, but they often include noticeable weight loss despite a normal appetite, episodes of vomiting, and the peculiar behavior known as "scooting," where a cat drags its rear along the ground to relieve irritation. Additionally, you might see segments of the tapeworm, which resemble small grains of rice, in the cat’s f***s or around its bedding.

To prevent tapeworm infections, it is crucial to maintain a vigilant flea control routine and good rodent control. An overall parasite prevention program for your cat can be designed by your veterinary team.
