Happy National Wildlife Day!
We talked about bats a week ago so today we are going to talk about another common backyard friend who may come face to tail with your pets. Skunks.
Being bitten or scratched causes the same concern as bats, in which skunks can carry rabies too, however it’s more common for them to spray and run. Their spray not only has a strong odour, but it is an oily substance that sticks to fur, skin and anything it comes into contact with.
If your pet is sprayed in the face, it could cause redness, swelling and irritation, excessive drooling and pawing at the mouth and vomiting (as the spray tastes about as good as it smells).
While tomato juice is highly promoted, it is actually a myth, and you are better off reaching for Skunk-Off to break down the oils. Make sure to clean the eyes first with water, and then bathe the rest of your pet thoroughly. If your pet’s distress persists, call us for an appointment, but don’t be surprised when the smell sticks around for a few days.
