We are now three-for-three for new collective agreements. Our members at the Cape Breton Post recently ratified a new three-year contract, joining bargaining units at the Chronicle Herald and Charlottetown Guardian/Summerside Journal Pioneer with successful negotiations in the past five months. We're excited to have labour peace and stability for journalists and support staff at our biggest newsrooms in Nova Scotia and P.E.I. for the next few years.

We are extremely proud to announce our new members in PEI have their first-ever collective agreement. Journalists and finance staff recently joined HTU as part of their three-year mission to create fair and healthy working conditions at the Charlottetown Guardian and Summerside Journal Pioneer. Members of the new unit’s bargaining team worked long days with representatives from Postmedia to come to a four-year agreement. This historic step comes on the heels of a recent three-year deal for the Halifax newsroom so spirits on both sides of the table continue to trend in a positive direction.

After months of work behind the scenes, we are thrilled to announce two pieces of great news. HTU is officially welcoming the Cape Breton Post local into our family and we are also bringing our colleagues from the Charlottetown Guardian and Summerside Journal Pioneer into the fold. Our P.E.I. brothers and sisters secured their union certification in recent weeks and are about to negotiate their first-ever collective agreement.

Journalists and support staff from the four papers in Nova Scotia and P.E.I. will now work as one to support each other and deliver local news to readers across our two provinces and beyond. This step comes on the heels of our one-year anniversary with Postmedia and we all look forward to building a healthy working relationship with them in this new chapter.

We are thinking about all working people on the front lines today, with a special place in our thoughts to the teachers and support staff in our education system who will join our students in schools tomorrow. It’s another reminder of how many workers in both the public and private sector have put their own health and safety at risk to keep our society running through these challenging times - nurses, police, bus drivers, restaurant staff, cashiers, custodians, grocery store employees, and so many more. We can’t name everyone but we appreciate everything people from so many different parts of the workforce do for us, now more than ever. All the best to you all on Labour Day.

More on yesterday's layoffs at SaltWire. No one in our union has received a permanent layoff notice but the company said we will be updated in a week or two. We currently have six members still on temporary layoff and we are doing everything we can to rally around them. They deserve to be called back - journalists and press operators create the product so we know what our value is. We also know layoffs are a reality in these challenging teams, especially in this industry, but what we expect from management is for the terms of our collective agreements to be respected. Please support local news and keep your fingers crossed for us.

We stand with our colleagues in Ottawa and Montreal. This type of heavy-handed tactic by the company is unproductive and unnecessary. Stay strong, brothers and sisters!

Postmedia is threatening to lock out our members at the Ottawa Citizen and Ottawa Sun on Monday if they don’t vote to accept a bad deal. If so, our members at the Montreal Gazette will strike and two of the company’s biggest papers will be hobbled. Support is already pouring in from within our union and other unions. Stronger together!
