October has been full of fun with these lovelies who have been staying with us for training for two week stints. We had Zeus and Gordie for the first bit of the month; and Opal, who is here now. All of them have been stealing my heart. I had to picture Murphy who we had months ago and who was our first Portuguese Waterdog trainee. They are very intelligent pups indeed, but it is always nice to have the help of Sprout and Wooly to be there to show them the ropes.
Say hi to these really brilliant pups, pictured her,e who are new pros at the fun behaviours they are mastering!
Housetraining, Sit, Lay Down, Stand, Stay, On the Mat, Come, Twist, Leash Walking, Touch, Paw 1 & 2, Crate Training, puppy Socialization and much more... Happy Fall Everyone!

Here we have Mr. Wooly doing his favourite new behaviour called "Circus Elephant". He has learned to maneuver around this stool which will build him towards getting and delivering things like medications and having no issues with physical obstacles. Dogs that can deliver items and open doors are helpful for people with mobility issues.

Wooly gets an A+ for his Circus Elephant.

A tired pup is a happy pup. I’ve been enjoying this time training Murphy using OCBA technique. He is one smart fella. It’s hard to not get attached to him while he waits to join his family in Connecticut! I can’t help but love this little Curly-Fry!

This is an important post. Please share far and wide...
RIGHT NOW...
In Ontario, there's a deadly disease that is being spread through saliva and urine. It can be contracted from dog to human as well. This disease has come from a puppy-mil in Kismutt. If you know anyone with a new puppy from one of the sources I mention below, please encourage them to take their dog to the vet immediately to get tested and keep your dog away from this dog. This also goes for anyone who has recently rescued a new puppy-mill mother from the rescue after being apprehended from the OSPCA. The mother might also have it and will need to be seen by a vet and kept away from other dogs.

Puppy Mills are all over our country. Especially in Quebec where animal cruelty laws are even more lackluster. I will get into that in a second but please beware of buying a puppy mill dog. Here's how to avoid it:
1. Did you find your dog on Kijiji ? -There's a very high chance that it is from a puppy-mill. Just because you don't go to a place that looks like a farm pumping out dogs, doesn't rule out that you're interacting with a puppy-mill broker. In Ontario, a lot of puppy mills are run by the Amish communities, believe it or not.
2. Did you get your dog at a pet store? Most definitely a puppy-mill dog.
Make sure that any dog you get has the vet checks, papers and breeder contracts. Check references with the vet and read through the website, see if they are listed as a recognized breeder who is operating with the highest of health standards.
DO NOT SUPPORT MASS-BREEDERS...
Why?
1. The females never have positive human interaction. They are kept in small cages, without enough room to stand up and lose ears and other parts that could poke through for the next caged dog to bite.
2. Their f***s fall through the wires onto the females stacked below.
3. They are shot up with hormones as early as 6 months and bred for years. Sometimes needles are not clean never mind that they are being inseminated with the stud through the hormonal boost. There is little to no vet care.
4. The puppies are taken from the mother at 5-6 weeks but shouldn't be taken from the mother until at least 8-9 weeks.
5. The breeding dogs don't even resemble a dog, with skin infections, hair missing from the ammonia of the f***s. Poor mama's!
6. These dogs are usually kept in a barn enclosure and never see light or get to walk. They are fed the worst possible food and are used to just pump out babies. It's truly heart breaking. BUT they can also be brokered out to a "family" who's pet had puppies, or to a "registered breeder".

I will be writing my local MP to stop Puppy-Mills in ON and Canada. If you would be so kind as to do the same, we will be voices for these dogs that are suffering.

With that said, I want to leave on a happy note. A month ago, we welcomed "Walter" into our family. He was pupped from the shelter off of death's door and into foster care and then made the trip to Canada to join Sprout and Mrs. Dogfire! I recommend rescuing a dog for a legitimate non-profit rescue. Our Sprout and Walter are both from a rescue. They have been healthy, happy and adaptable dogs and the loves of my life!
