Friends!
I'm judging my first ever scent work trial.
This trial is being hosted by .and.beyond_canine.skill and it will be held in Hubbards, NS this October 17-18th.

You can find out more about the organization, Canadian Detection Sport Association, and this trial at the CDSA website: https://www.cdsa.ca/pages/home

The entries open tomorrow and they will be drawn as a lottery - you will have 48 hours to enter. If you don't have a CDSA number yet but you want to sign up for the trial, just put "pending" in the section asking for your dog's ID.

I think we are also looking for volunteers if anyone wants to come check it out but doesn't feel ready to compete yet.

Eva had an excellent first day tonight in our current intro to scent work class. She is usually my demo dog while I teach classes, but for this one she is a student too! This means that the other students get to watch Eva learn scent work in real time, rather than watching a more experienced scent work dog.

Watching a finished product is not always helpful, this is why I put a lot of emphasis on students watching each other’s dogs in scent class. Demo dogs are very valuable!

She’s a very good girl and works very hard.

CARO Novice Rally Obedience at Nova Dogsport
7:45-8:45pm on Tuesdays

This class runs for 6 weeks and is $180

Rally Obedience is a fun sport that is a mix between formal obedience and dancing with your dog. The focus in rally obedience is on the connection between dog and handler while heeling around a course. It is more physically accessible for some dogs than agility, and all of the skills you learn in rally obedience are skills you will use in regular life (walk in a loose leash heel, sit, down, stand, ignore distractions, stay connected in a busy environment). Rally Obedience is mostly on leash, which means dogs work on leash in class. I build some fitness skills into these classes as well, because fit dogs are happy dogs!

This is a perfect class for those of you have tried scent work and want to get back into it. We focus on building skills, building value for odour, and always working on handler skills.
This is a fun, indoor class that will help you beat the summer heat and entertain you and your dog!

Starting August 5th, this class runs for 6 weeks.

This class will start with food searches and build value for hunting for a specific essential oil odour.

The total cost for the class is $180. There is a $50 non-refundable deposit for this class, the rest of the class cost is due by the first day of class.

Our next CARO Trial will be at Ace It on Sunday August 30th*.

We are welcoming back Carolina Bergonzoni from Cape Breton to judge alongside me. Here is the running order:

What now? Make sure you have your dog's CARO number and start training those beautiful rally skills!

FEO: We allow FEO runs in any level (4 minutes in the ring), dogs of any age can enter FEO and they do not need a CARO number for FEO runs. This means you can bring your baby puppies to have some positive ring experience with you (while trying to avoid accidents, of course). FEO runs are half the price of regular runs.

Congratulations to our first ever Puppy Scent Work class graduates!

This class was a pleasure to teach, we worked on puppy life skills, like waiting our turn, loose leash walking, and focusing on our owners (or searching!) in a class full of other excited puppies. Most of the puppies showed up barky and jumpy and wondering if it was playtime. The beautiful thing about scent work is how calming it is for dogs of all ages.

Mental stimulation is an important need to fulfil for puppies, physical stimulation can only get you so far!

These owners should all be very proud of the great improvements they made with their pups, in patience and calmness and in their handling skills of their new scent work puppy. Great work everybody!
