My take on no-pull harnesses for dogs…

It’s either a ploy to sell you a harness.

Or it’s not comfortable for the dog.

I don’t like either of those possibilities.

It’s that time of the year again! Voting has started for Community Votes Halifax 2026 and I made it through the nomination round!

Last year I managed to pull off a silver award in a sea of amazing trainers. I’d love to do the same again this year!

It only takes a minute and you only need to vote once (this isn’t a vote every single day thing so I won’t be stalking you constantly!)

The ONE thing I wish more dog guardians knew:

The first try doesn’t always tell you what your dog is capable of.

I really thought Bailey would enjoy scentwork. She’s a working-breed girl, and I thought it could be a great outlet for her. But the first time we tried it, she basically blew me off.

Instead of pushing for more, we moved on before she completely checked out. We explored other activities. We practised heelwork, played with hoopers and worked on canine fitness.

While we were doing that, Bailey was building skills that went far beyond those individual activities. She was learning to focus for longer. She was becoming more engaged in our sessions. She was gaining confidence.

And she was learning that training could actually be fun.

Recently, we decided to try scentwork again.
And HOLY CRAP…she was so good at it! Even better, she really seemed to enjoy it.

Here’s what I learned:

There’s a difference between forcing your dog to continue with something they’re not enjoying and deciding that one unsuccessful attempt means the activity isn’t for them.

Sometimes your dog doesn’t need more practice at that one activity. They need time to build the focus, confidence, engagement and enjoyment that will help them succeed when they return to it.

Listen when your dog says, “Not right now.” But don’t assume that means “Not ever.”

Has your dog ever surprised you by loving something the second time around?

Before No Hassle Dog Training, there was Abbey.

She was my first dog as an adult, and she struggled with things I didn’t yet understand. Loving her made me want to learn more, do better and help other dog parents feel less alone.

Then came Mabel. She continues to remind me that listening has to go both ways. That her choices matter, and that connection grows when a dog feels heard.

And then there’s my sweet client, Bailey.

I’ve worked with her off and on since she was a puppy. When we started working together again at two years old, she was tough to motivate, struggled to turn off and didn’t care about a thing I said.

Honestly, I wondered if her family had made the right decision bringing me back.

But instead of deciding Bailey was the problem, we got curious about what made her light up. Now, we have so much fun training together. We keep adding new layers of difficulty to challenge her, and she continues to make me incredibly proud.

It took a village, too. I’m incredibly grateful to Lily from Big Stick Dog Training who helped us explore sportier training, while Sam with 𝐒𝐚𝐦 𝐒𝐳𝐜𝐳𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐨𝐰𝐬𝐤𝐢, 𝐃𝐍-𝐂𝐄𝐓, 𝐅𝐅𝐂𝐏 helped tackle walks with Bailey and her sister, Pippa!

Abbey taught me kindness. Mabel taught me choice. Bailey reminded me to stay curious and keep looking for connection.

Now I’d love to hear your story. What’s the name of the dog who changed you, and what did they teach you?

Charlie, Max, Sunny, Bailey & Pippa

My leggings are pet hair resistant.

I own more treat pouches than any reasonable person should.

And I had to buy an external hard drive for all the dog photos I “need” to keep.

Being a double income no kids millennial is going exactly as I planned 😂

What did I miss from the starter pack?
