BBQ Safety Tips Every Dog Owner Needs This Weekend

Backyard BBQs are a Labor Day staple, and your dog is very aware that something exciting is happening. But there are a few real hazards that are easy to miss when the party's in full swing. We have some timely reminders worth sharing before you fire up the grill.

The biggest things to watch for:
Keep food out of reach. Onions, garlic, grapes, raisins, and anything containing xylitol are all toxic to dogs. Ask guests not to feed your pup, and cover the trash as soon as it starts to fill up. A dog that gets into a tied garbage bag on the ground can do real damage to themselves in minutes.

Dispose of grill grease carefully. Never dump it on the ground. Dogs will go straight for it, and the grease can cause serious stomach problems and pancreatitis. Let it cool, then put it directly in the bin.
Keep them away from the grill. A hot grill is a burn hazard, and a dog can knock it over if they bolt. Block the area off, or keep them indoors while you're cooking.
Watch them around the pool. Even strong swimmers can tire out or get disoriented. Never leave your dog unsupervised near water, and use a life vest if there's any doubt.
And one more thing worth doing before the weekend: make sure your dog's microchip registration is up to date, and their ID tag is on. Fireworks and crowds are the top triggers for dogs bolting, and a current chip is the fastest way to get them home if they do.

Fun Ways to Make the Most of Labor Day Weekend With Your Dog

Labor Day weekend is one of the best of the year, and with a little planning, it can be just as great for your dog. Whether you're heading outdoors, hosting at home, or just soaking up the long weekend, here are some ideas for making it memorable for both of you.

Hit the water. Many community pools host an end-of-season dog swim right around Labor Day weekend before closing for the year. If yours does, it's not to be missed. Splash pads and dog beaches are another great option. Just make sure your pup has a well-fitting life vest if they're heading into deeper water or an open lake.

Go on an early morning hike. September temps can still run warm, so get out early while there's still shade and cool air on the trail. Your dog will thank you for it, and honestly so will you.

Visit a dog-friendly patio. More breweries, wineries, and open-air cafes welcome leashed dogs than ever. It's a great excuse to check one off your list while the weather's still perfect for sitting outside.

Host a pup BBQ. Invite a few friends and their well-behaved dogs for a low-key backyard hangout. Plenty of shade, fresh water, and some dog-safe treats on the side. Simple and so worth it.

Set up a DIY agility course. Boxes, cones, a hula hoop, a tunnel made from a folded blanket. Your dog won't care how elaborate it is. They'll just love that you're playing with them.

Whatever you end up doing, the most important ingredient is the same every time: your dog, right there with you.
