Graduating from puppy class doesn't mean you've finished training your dog. 🎓 The dog who graduates from puppy class isn't the dog you're going to have six months, a year, or two years from now.

As puppies grow, their brains, bodies, interests, social preferences, and needs change. And with these big changes comes a whole new world of Very Important Things to Investigate, from your young dog's perspective.

That doesn't mean puppy class doesn't work! Puppy class gives you a foundation: communication, reinforcement skills, an understanding of how your dog learns, and tools you can continue using as new stages and challenges pop up.

We don't expect children to finish kindergarten ready for adulthood. We probably shouldn't expect it from our puppies either. 😉

The term ‘puppy socialization’ pops up everywhere, but what does it actually mean? Hint: it’s a lot more than having your puppy meet lots of people and lots of dogs. It means exposing your puppy to a variety of different environments and contexts, in a way that is fun and positive, and in a way that minimizes unmanageable stress.

These experiences you expose your puppy to should be controlled to shape confidence, build curiosity, and condition positive emotional connections. The most influential experiences are ones that are novel, occurring outside your home and your neighbourhood.

By focusing on these broader areas you will be expanding your puppy’s comfort zone! Here are some ideas on where you can socialize a puppy in Guelph.

What gets rewarded gets repeated. 🐾

Technically, what gets reinforced gets repeated, which is the foundation of so much of what we do in positive reinforcement training.

Your dog checks in with you on a walk? Reward it.

Four paws stay on the floor when someone comes through the door? Reward it.

They choose their bed instead of supervising your dinner from three inches away? Definitely reward it.

We spend a lot of time reacting to the behaviours we don't want. Training gets much better when we get really good at noticing—and reinforcing—the hundreds of tiny choices our dogs make that we do want.

Catch them being good, pay them well, and watch those good behaviours grow. 💛

Choosing a daycare should involve more than finding somewhere your dog can burn off energy and play with friends. A good daycare should be thinking about your dog's safety, comfort, social skills, and individual needs throughout their entire day.

That means thoughtful screening before dogs join the group, knowledgeable supervision during play, opportunities to move freely between activities and rest, safe setups and equipment, and staff who know when a dog needs a break (or when daycare simply isn't the right fit for that dog).

And don't be afraid to ask questions! What does downtime look like? How are new dogs introduced? How is play monitored? What happens when a dog becomes overwhelmed? What training methods are used? Where do the dogs go potty? Can you see where your dog will actually spend their day?

When a dog is struggling, it can be easy to interpret their behaviour as stubborn, dramatic, or even deliberately disobedient... especially if their behaviour is attracting unwanted attention.

But behaviour is communication.

A dog who can't respond to a familiar cue, is barking or lunging, can't settle, or is suddenly making choices that seem completely out of character is trying to tell us they're having a hard time. Instead of asking, "Why won't my dog listen?" try asking, "What is making this moment so hard for them?"

When we look at behaviour as information instead of defiance, we can stop struggling against our dogs and start figuring out what support they need. When your dog is having a big behaviour, they aren't trying to give you hard time. They're having a hard time.

Camping with your dog is a lot more fun when you're prepared. 🏕️🐾

For us, that means gear that gives dogs room to explore safely, a comfortable (and very washable!) place to sleep, plenty of options for chewing and enrichment, and a first aid kit that we sincerely hope never leaves the bag.

It's also important to plan for downtime! Camping comes with ALL the smells, sounds, wildlife, people, and general excitement, and most dogs need help switching off. Familiar busy projects that promote licking, sniffing, or chewing can help them decompress, and give you some time to make dinner or start your fire without micromanaging your dog.

"Touch" is one of our favourite skills to teach—and Theo here enthusiastically demonstrates why. 🐾

A great touch isn't just a nose boop. It's a fun way to redirect your dog's attention back to you. Maybe your dog is staring a little too long at the neighbour's dog, or you want to get them in from the yard without a hassle, or you simply want to reconnect with your dog during a walk. A strong touch cue gives them something clear, fun, and rewarding to do instead of getting stuck on the environment.

We love building so much value into this cue that dogs can't wait to come flying in for it. The more predictable, enthusiastic, and rewarding this cue is, the easier it is for your dog to disengage from the environment and choose you instead. Also, watching dogs enthusiastically launch themselves into a nose target never gets old.
