We are 'officially' introducing Max!
Max is a cute, active presumed Corgi / Jack Russell Terrier mix weighing 17lbs who is looking for a very specific, dedicated handler. Max is a dog with a bite history, and he needs an experienced owner who understands dog body language, respects boundaries, and is fully committed to strict management.
Max originally came to Safe Paws in late summer 2025 and went into a foster, then eventually was adopted. His previous foster included a full family, cats and dogs. We never saw any issues. Shortly after he was adopted, Max began exhibiting behavioral issues that escalated to biting, including 2 bites to the husband in the home, as well as a stranger, which ultimately led to his return to the rescue. His family tried working closely with vets, trainers, and structured courses but it wasn't working. He currently has a bite record with public health in the town of Beeton.
For the last two months, Max has been in an experienced foster home where we have been carefully assessing him. What we’ve learned is that Max’s behavior isn't necesarrily something that can be "trained away", it is him expressing his discomfort with certain situations that requires a handler dedicated to environmental management. He is not an aggressive dog.
Max is a "one-person" or "single couple" type of dog. He is not a social butterfly for crowded patios, busy family gatherings, or public events.
In his previous home and his current foster home, Max is a seamlessly good dog with his female handlers - zero issues. With men, he requires a slow, hands-off transition. In his current foster home, his male foster dad gave Max total space, didn't force interaction, and let Max dictate the pace. Because of that experienced approach, Max now seeks out attention from him and happily cuddles with him on the couch.
Max dislikes being touched, handled, or crowded by people he does not know. This needs to be respected in order for him to be successful.
Advocating in Public: Not every dog needs to be pet by strangers. Max can coexist in public beautifully, go for walks, and pass by people effortlessly as long as they leave him alone. His future owner must be 100% comfortable advocating for him and telling strangers, "No, you cannot pet my dog." Which I know is hard, just look at his adorable face!?
🔹 The Good Stuff:
When he is in his comfort zone with his trusted people and his boundaries are respected, Max is an incredible companion. He is house trained, crate trained(loves his crate), knows "place" and a few other tricks. He is fantastic in the car, walks wonderfully on a leash, and loves going for hikes. He doesn't need to be cooped up at home, he just needs an owner who manages his surroundings.
He is a moderate energy boy who loves his toys and has a great playtime drive. He recently discovered swimming and enjoys cooling off in the river! His foster mom says Max is fun and playful and is overall a joy to be around.
Max has spent the last two months coexisting with other dogs in his foster home. He can guard his toys occasionally, so while he can coexist with a balanced dog under proper supervision, he would also be completely content as an only dog. He cannot live with cats.
🔹 Ideal Home Requirements:
- An experienced, adult-only home (no young children).
- A low-traffic household with a predictable environment and minimal visitors.
- A handler with experience managing resource guarding and space/handling sensitivities.
- Someone comfortable using a basket muzzle when required.
- Someone fully committed to advocating for him in public and maintaining safety protocols.
Max is incredibly loyal to the people who take the time to understand him and earn his trust. If you have the experience and space to offer Max a structured, safe environment, please email us at [email protected] 💜
