Last week, I sent my North Star Life Skills students home with a simple homework assignment: practice the Art of Doing Nothing. Go somewhere you’ve never taken your dog before. Grab a coffee, sit on a patio, bring a book, and just… hang out. No constant commands. No asking for behaviours every few seconds. Just be together and let your dog learn that the world can happen around them without them needing to participate in everything.

So today, Banner and I are practicing what I preach. We’re sitting outside a busy dog park in Guelph while I enjoy my iced coffee. Dogs are coming and going, people are moving around, and there’s plenty happening — but Banner doesn’t need to react to it, greet it, or investigate it. We’re simply observing, staying connected, and practicing neutrality. 💙🐾💙

This is passive training, and passive training is powerful. Teaching your dog how to settle, observe, disengage, and simply exist in an environment is every bit as important as teaching sit, down, stay, or heel. Neutrality gives your dog the ability to say, “I see it, but I don’t need to do anything about it.” 🫶

Sometimes the best training session is the one where you barely do anything at all. ☕️🐾

Pack walks aren’t just about putting dogs together and walking. I like to incorporate obedience and real-life skills throughout our time together. Even on a rainy morning, we can stop, find a structure, and work on place, down stays, duration, and handler movement around the dogs. These little moments are what help turn training into something practical and reliable. 💙🐾💙

Structure and neutrality are huge parts of my training philosophy. I want dogs to learn that they don’t always need to be moving, greeting, reacting, or looking for the next thing. Sometimes the most valuable skill is simply being able to settle, hold position, and calmly observe their environment while their handler moves around them. That’s real-world life skills in action. 🐾
