🐾 A VERY IMPORTANT REMINDER FOR DOG OWNERS — XYLITOL 🐾
Please be very careful with xylitol around your dogs. Xylitol is a sweetener that is safe for people but can be extremely toxic to dogs. It can cause a rapid and dangerous drop in blood sugar and, in some cases, severe liver injury or failure. (Merck Veterinary Manual)
One thing many people don’t realize is that xylitol can be listed under other names, including birch sugar, wood sugar, or birch bark extract. So always check the ingredient list. (U.S. Food and Drug Administration)
It can be found in things such as:
• Sugar-free chewing gum
• Sugar-free candy and mints
• Some peanut and nut butters, peanut butter
• Sugar-free desserts and ice cream
• Some baked goods
• Jams and jellies
• Cough syrups and liquid medicines
• Vitamins and supplements
• Toothpaste and mouthwash
• Some other medications and personal-care products (U.S. Food and Drug Administration)
⚠️ Please don’t assume something is safe just because it says “sugar-free.” Check the ingredients.
Signs of xylitol poisoning can include vomiting, weakness, lethargy, difficulty walking, collapse, shaking, seizures and, in serious cases, liver failure. Signs can develop very quickly, although some effects can be delayed. (U.S. Food and Drug Administration)
If you think your dog has eaten something containing xylitol, don’t wait for symptoms. Contact your veterinarian or an emergency veterinary clinic immediately. This is an emergency. ❤️🐾
A few seconds spent checking the label could save your dog’s life.
