🐟 Meet the Brunei Beauty — Betta macrostoma!

Something special at River & Reef Aquatics! These fascinating wild-type bettas have plenty of character, and their breeding behaviour is remarkable: the male carries the eggs in his mouth while they develop! 💙

They’re best suited to experienced fishkeepers who can provide a quiet, carefully maintained aquarium.

🌿 Care essentials:
• Aquarium: A 20-gallon long or larger for a compatible pair, with plenty of hiding places. Monitor for aggression.
• Temperature: 20–25°C (68–77°F).
• Water: Very soft, acidic water; commonly recommended pH 4–6. Match their existing conditions and avoid sudden changes.
• Setup: Gentle filtration, subdued lighting, plants, driftwood and caves.
• Lid: A snug-fitting cover is essential—they’re excellent jumpers! Leave an air gap above the water.
• Food: Varied small frozen or live foods, including brine shrimp, daphnia and bloodworms. Some accept quality pellets.
• Tankmates: A dedicated species tank is the best starting point. Small shrimp may become snacks!
• Maintenance: Regular partial water changes with matched water; keep ammonia and nitrite at zero.

🌿 Let your aquarium grow beyond the glass! 🐠

Plants like pothos, monstera and peace lilies do more than look beautiful! With their roots growing in your aquarium, they absorb nutrients—including nitrate—to support their growth and help manage nutrient buildup. Their trailing roots can also give smaller fish extra shelter. 💚

Keep the leaves above water, start with clean, soil-free roots and provide suitable lighting. They’re a wonderful addition to your aquarium alongside regular filtration and water changes!

Our spoiled girl is keeping her space while she gets used to the new gentleman. We’re giving them time to settle in—she’s still the queen of this aquarium!

🌿 A little piece of the Rio Negro at River & Reef 🐟

“Rio Negro” means Black River, and it’s one of the great rivers of the Amazon basin. Its famous dark water gets its tea colour from natural compounds released as leaves, wood, and other plant material break down. It may look almost black, but that colour isn’t mud—it’s part of what makes the river so striking.

That was the inspiration for our new display: towering driftwood, plants growing above and below the water, a gentle waterfall, and little flashes of fish moving through the dark water. The tannins give the whole tank a warm, wild look that I love.

It’s a Rio Negro-inspired tank with its own River & Reef personality. Photos are fun, but you really have to see this one in person! Come take a look and tell us what you spot hiding among the wood. 👀
