So the weekend has had us knocked down by a cold plus all the news about the Covid 19 virus and travel restrictions. For this week, I am cancelling any indoor training, while the remainder of my coughing disappears. Both Keith and I caught this cold from my son, who has had it for over a month so I am not worried about it being anything more sinister than the common cold. I am taking advantage of the outdoors and still keeping up with the group walks and play groups at the dog park. Matilda, Charlotte, Kingsford, Georgia and I will be going to the dog park on Wednesdays and Fridays at 10 am. Chloe will come but only if there are some larger dogs who have her energy for play. I am using this week to re-group, work on my calendar and hopefully get some options for people who want training but still need to avoid large groups. We are, of course, still open for boarding and daycare, though with the travel bans, I suspect we will be quiet. I am also available to do dog walking if you know of anyone who might need this. Hoping that everyone is keeping safe and healthy and giving extra love to those pets!

We are having email issues with Pandabear Kennels so please be patient. We hope to have it and the calendar fixed today. It is interesting that in order to verify an account, I need a code sent to my cell phone. My cell phone doesn't work at my home and my home is 10 minutes from my computer. So we are double teaming this morning, while I am at the dog park and getting this done. Good thing my husband is great at IT.
Yesterday I presented the first "I Speak Doggie" to a preschool class. It has been years since I have talked to preschoolers in a group and I came out of the building smiling. It was such fun to teach dog safety to such eager learners. My Havanese, Kingsford, accompanied me as my demo dog and he was a big hit. I am still working on keeping the wee hummingbird still. He has Havanese spin and loves showing off. I purchased this program to teach from a couple trainers in the US. I like its positive message and the way it is presented. There is a cute video and songs(which will keep repeating in my head....) There is also a program for elementary school children. I have sent proposals to the elementary schools and I am hoping to hear back after Spring Break. This is a great link to the information. There is no charge for this program.

I am off to the dog park this morning at around 10 and then to Christina Lake for a training walk. I am hoping with the improved email communication we can get those enthusiastic walks going in Grand Forks! I would also consider a drive to Greenwood or Midway if there is enough interest. I think training walks are a great way to practice what our dogs know and make sure they can follow simple cues anywhere.

I started out for the Dog Park this morning in a storm of snow and ended up with beautiful sunshine. Gotta love Spring. This morning we took a daycare dog(a lovely hound/lab cross) to the dog park to play with another hound/Rhodesian ridgeback cross. It was lovely to watch these two young dogs connect and play. They clearly had similar temperaments and energy levels and they had a wonderful time chasing each other and meeting with new dogs. Chloe, the Beardie was clearly more interested in policing the situation, so we got to work on our recall and focus while she learned to ignore the rumble. It is a great distraction for training a young dog. Matilda, the Havanese and little sister, Georgia came along to play. I think we plan to make this a regular Wednesday/ Friday event.

Wow, another cold snap and weather yesterday that made me think it is not Spring yet. I did manage to get a pack of dogs up the mountainside yesterday. I was feeling brave so I decided to walk them up the road. I walked my three Beardies Dexter, Dazzle and Chloe, two granddog Corgis, Winston and Lily and our Springer Spaniel, Sasha. We have not done the road in a while so I was interested to see how a group of six walked together. I was pleasantly surprised that their loose lead walking training held. Only one rogue dart between the legs by the Springer who has not had as much experience on the leash. They loved the off-leash time and I was able to truly relax as they stayed in sight and checked in with me. The walk home was considerably less energetic for all of us. I happened to meet a couple of neighbours on a stroll. My first thought was "oh no" as I was definitely outpowered by dogs, but I am happy to say that the greeting went well. No dogs jumped up and, in fact, they lay down as I visited with the people.
We also had a great play day yesterday with a very sweet and incredibly cute Aussie girl. I had a couple of daycare/boarding dogs that we introduced successfully and loads of fun was had by all. My training area has a capacity of four and it was lovely to see the older dogs demonstrate such good play skills and manners. Next Tuesday we have a tiny pup lined up for a special play date with 8 pound Matilda. If you have a small dog, please pm me and join us. Watching puppies play is more relaxing than a hot bath for me.

We had a lovely walk in the sunshine today. Except for that cold air, it is almost Spring. I decided to take 3 Havanese with me and quickly realized that Matilda, my teenager, needs a bit of a training tune-up. She does not really pull on the leash but it is definitely tighter than I like it. She also likes to weave in front of me when I walk and I am far too clumsy for that to be a good idea. Little Georgia came for her first walk. She is quite the brave little soul but too small to do the full 45 minutes. Luckily she is small enough to carry. Kingsford, at age 3 remembered his lessons and kept right at my heels the entire walk. He really is a treat to take out.
Tomorrow we start Puppy play and learn classes. At 10 am we have a small puppy group and we will be discussing housetraining and how to get it right. At 11:30, after the small dogs leave, the regular size group will come in. We have a new addition to the group so we will be discussing how to successfully introduce dogs and what to look for to know we are getting it right.

Spring is definitely here. One minute it is warm sun and the next blowing snow. This Spring, I am doing the same positive training but offering it in a slightly different variation. Firstly Tuesday is puppy day at my place. I am offering play and learn socializing sessions for puppies who are just learning. These are 45 minute session where we provide appropriate socialization for your pup plus discuss puppy topics like housetraining, learning to share, and problem prevention. Small puppies, under 12 pounds are at 10:00 and larger pups at 11:30. Pups should have started vaccination programs. Tuesday evening and Wednesdays 12:15 are Group Walk and Challenge in town. We do three training challenges and then we go for a loose lead walk around town. This is your chance to practice what you have already taught and get help with specifics. The new workshop rotation is beginning this Monday with an introduction to loose lead walking. Saturday brings a workshop on the all important Focus that we need from our dogs to help them to do the cues that we ask them under all circumstances. There is still one spot in the Saturday workshop. If you just want to meet me and ask questions, I will be hanging out at the dog park on Wednesday and Friday at 10 am.
