Point Leamington is an area that has unfortunately struggled with a stray cat population for years. The SPCA attempted a large TNR effort in the community several years ago but every year, kittens and cats continue to trickle in.

Mama Cambria is so petite that you can barely pick her out from her own kittens! When she went to the vet for her spay and testing, a tick was found attached to her eyelid!!! 😢🤢Another reminder that outdoor cats face more than just hunger and the weather. If you have a cat that roams outdoors in the Point Leamington area, please be mindful of ticks, parasites and fights with unaltered or stray cats. Regular tick prevention, vaccines and spaying/neutering are especially important where stray populations are present.

The good news: Cambria is now spayed and tested negative for FIV/FeLV and all of her babies have received their first vaccines and dewormer. 🧡 The whole family is still scared, but they can be handled and have so much potential. They are available for adoption to quiet, patient homes willing to give them the time, consistency and one on one attention they need to build confidence. They may not walk through your door ready to be lap cats but with a little patience, they just might surprise you!

A story about Peaches - one she would want. 🍑🤍

Peaches’ story (with our shelter) started in 2024, when she was living outside and wanted absolutely nothing to do with humans. It took months of trying before she was finally caught and brought safely to the shelter. She was hissy and didn’t want attention but slowly, Peaches surprised everyone. With time, patience and a lot of kindness, the scared outdoor cat started to realize that humans weren’t so bad. She learned to enjoy attention, softened into shelter life and eventually found a family of her own. We thought that was the happy ending to Peaches’ story.

Then she escaped.

Days turned into weeks, weeks into months and eventually an entire year passed without a single sighting. Her family searched and hoped, but after so much time, they understandably began to believe they may never see her again.

Until one day, there she was.

A photo of a familiar little face appeared online. Peaches was alive. After a full year on her own, she was caught once again and brought to safety. Not to mention she was still huge for a female cat and no sign of being out on the go for a year! Her previous family ultimately felt they weren’t the right home for Peaches anymore, which means this incredibly resilient little cat has somehow found her way back to us and is looking for a home all over again. Normally, our adoption agreement requires cats to be kept indoors. It is the safest place for them. But every once in a while, an animal reminds us that there isn’t one perfect answer for every cat. (And Peaches has made her opinion on the great outdoors pretty clear. 😂)
Peaches is currently residing in a cage and it’s clear she’s depressed and needs something.
Maybe it’s a cushy barn home where she can have warmth, food, veterinary care and people looking out for her while still enjoying the life she knows. Or maybe it’s a special home in a safe setting where, once properly settled and bonded, Peaches can have some carefully managed outdoor freedom. Or an extremely large catio with room to explore. She isn’t looking for the most conventional home. She’s looking for the right one and we are option to options for her because that’s what she would want. Peaches has been caught twice, learned to trust humans, found a family, disappeared for a year and somehow made her way back to safety. After everything she’s gone through, she’d really like this next stop to be the one that finally sticks. 🍑🤍

Joel’s last request before heading off to university… find Milo a home. 🤞🧡

Every summer we welcome student workers to the shelter and every year there’s an animal (or five ) who manages to completely steal their heart. This year our student Joel chose Milo or Milo chose Joel, depending on who you ask.

Before heading off to university, Joel left this note in hopes of helping his favourite buddy seal the deal:

“After spending my summer at the SPCA as a student worker, I got to meet so many amazing animals! One in particular I fell in love with, unfortunately I could not take him home with me. 😢 His name is Milo and he is the perfect cat! His favourite things to do consist of zooming around the halls, finding the comfiest cushion and napping for hours, and he loves to get his belly rubbed! Milo loves your attention and is the sweetest, most handsome young man!”

Milo is a 4.5 year old neutered male who was originally adopted from our shelter a few years ago. He was returned after having some trouble getting along with another cat in his home, so the right fit will be important for him. At the shelter, we’ve seen nothing but Milo’s loving side. He’s affectionate, entertaining and very happy to accept all the attention you’re willing to give. Joel did his part, even copying Milo’s hair style 😝😹 now Milo just needs someone to take him home! 🤞

Toby came to the shelter about 6 months ago after being rescued by Baie Verte Cat Rescue, and for the longest time, we hardly knew he was in the room. He hid, kept to himself and needed plenty of time to decide we weren’t so bad. Fast forward 210 days later and Toby has found his voice, literally. 😂 He now yells for food and attention, seeks out his people and has become a completely different little cat. Time in the male room, good feline friends and consistent love from the staff have helped Toby build so much confidence. He gets along well with other cats and is a petite little guy with a lot more personality than he initially let on. Toby is estimated to be around 2 years old. We’ve had him neutered, vaccinated, dewormed and tested negative for FIV/FeLV! He took his time getting here, but he’s ready. Now he just needs his people. 🤍

🌈 Skittles 🌈
Sweet Skittles came to us after her owner moved into a seniors home. Like many cats, the sudden change completely turned her world upside down. She became so stressed she stopped using the litter box and needed a few trips to the vet before she started feeling like herself again. Now? She’s one of the sweetest cats in the shelter!! Skittles has done a full transformation at the shelter, when she arrived she barely moved, now she happily follows the staff around, soaking up every bit of attention she can get. 🥰 She also didn’t like the other cats previously and now she’s in a room with multiple coexisting like a champ. She does miss having someone to call her own and being a spoiled only kitty though. Skittles is 3 years young, we’ve had her spayed, vaccinated, dewormed and tested negative for FIV/FeLV!

If you’re looking for a gentle, affectionate companion, Skittles is ready to love someone again ASAP!

In some happier news… 🖤

One of the semi-feral moms has finally been caught and even better, her last little baby was caught with her! 🥳 The final additions to our Meow Chemical Romance crew 🥀 are officially safe. Mom Cambria and her little mini-me Jasey (also a female orange!) are understandably very scared right now. Their world has changed completely, so for the moment we’re giving them a quiet space, good food and time to decompress. They’ll now receive the care they need, including vaccines, deworming, spays and eventually homes of their own! The two will need calm, patient homes that understand socializing a scared or semi-feral cat takes time. For now, we’ll take the win of knowing the full family is finally safe and off the streets.

❗️MISSING - Grey cat from EVSPCA❗️

Unfortunately while attempting to transport a feral cat into the shelter, the cat escaped from the cage into the parking lot. This is a grey feral cat who was potentially pregnant. We have traps out for her around the shelter but please keep an eye out and call 709-489-3604 with any sightings. This cat will not come to you and will run if approached. 💔

~ADOPTED~
Thank you for all the interest in Puppy! He has a potential home lined up to meet him tomorrow! 🥳 This post will be updated if/when he is officially adopted. 🩷

Meet Puppy 🥹 Yes, his name is Puppy and at 1.5 years old, he’s still pretty committed to the role. Puppy is a 35–40 lb Heinz 57 with an adorable little body paired with a slightly larger head, giving him an overall cartoon-character quality that makes him pretty irresistible. Puppy has spent much of his young life outdoors and hasn’t always had as much one on one attention as he would have liked. Because of that, he is absolutely starved for love and soaks up every bit of attention he can get. He loves everyone and really just wants to be wherever his people are. He already knows some basic commands, although they could use a little fine tuning. The good news is Puppy is incredibly eager to please, making him a great candidate for someone willing to continue his training. He has received his DAPP vaccine and dewormer at the shelter but is not yet neutered. Sweet, silly, eager and affectionate.. Puppy has a lot of love to make up for and ready to get started! ❤️
