In NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR...
..over the past few weeks, rolling brownouts and power disruptions on the Island have highlighted a reality we don’t talk about enough in Newfoundland and Labrador: energy scarcity isn’t theoretical — it’s already here.

Much of our planning conversation focuses on renewables, and rightly so. But renewables alone do not solve reliability, dispatchability, or grid resilience — especially in a climate-exposed, geographically stretched system like ours.

This is where Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) deserve serious, adult discussion.

SMRs aren’t about replacing renewables. They’re about complimenting them — providing firm, weather-independent power that can stabilize grids, support industry, and reduce reliance on aging thermal assets.

At DeepGEO, our work starts where many nuclear conversations stop: with responsibility. Power generation must be paired with long-term stewardship of spent fuel, Indigenous co-development, and planning measured in generations, not election cycles.

If Newfoundland and Labrador is serious about energy security, economic resilience, and climate goals, nuclear — especially SMRs — cannot remain a blind spot.

The question isn’t whether we like nuclear.
It’s whether we’re willing to plan responsibly for the system we actually have.

📢 Exciting News from Canada’s Nuclear Industry 📢

The Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation has officially confirmed their willingness to move forward as a host community for Canada’s Deep Geological Repository (DGR) for used nuclear fuel in Ontario.

This follows the earlier decisions by the Municipality of South Bruce and the Township of Ignace, who also voted to proceed as a willing host communities. Together, these decisions mark significant milestones in Canada’s journey toward safe, long-term nuclear waste management. 🎉

These milestones demonstrate the power of informed community engagement, transparency, and respectful collaboration with Indigenous leadership. They highlight how thoughtful dialogue and shared understanding can lead to decisions that balance local community benefits with national energy sustainability goals.

We had a fantastic time at EXPO Labrador 2024, where curiosity and thoughtful conversations about the future of energy took center stage. Many visitors were eager to learn more about nuclear energy and our Multinational Deep Geological Repository (MDGR) concept.

While some have questions, most people were open-minded and want the chance to make informed decisions about what happens in Labrador—this could be one of the biggest opportunities in our history.
