š§š“ Are you feeding salt to your horse every day?
Salt provides sodium and chloride, two essential electrolytes that play important roles in maintaining fluid balance, hydration, nerve signaling, and normal muscle function. Because most forage-based diets do not provide enough sodium to meet a horseās daily requirements, salt should be intentionally included in the feeding program.
Providing a measured amount of loose salt in your horseās feed each day is the most reliable way to ensure adequate intake. A salt block or free-choice loose salt should also be available, but voluntary consumption can vary considerably between horses, so it shouldnāt be relied on as the only source.
āļø During hot weather, salt becomes especially important. Horses lose significant amounts of sodium and chloride through sweat, and these losses increase with exercise, temperature, humidity, and sweating rate.
āļø Donāt stop feeding salt when temperatures drop. Adequate sodium intake helps stimulate thirst and encourage water consumption, which is particularly important during winter when some horses naturally drink less.
Fresh, clean water should always be available alongside salt, regardless of the season.
š Salt is one of the simplest additions you can make to your horseās diet, but it plays an essential role year-round.
