🌿We have a bit of a surprise update regarding Annie.
🌸 🌸 🌸
While all signs initially pointed to a beautiful litter on the way, it turns out Annie has been experiencing a pseudo-pregnancy (a false pregnancy).
Our sweet girl did an incredible job preparing—her body fully convinced her (and us!) 🤣 that puppies were coming, but a recent x-ray confirms an empty uterus, and therefore no little ones this time around. False pregnancies are actually very common and natural in dogs, as their hormones mimic a true pregnancy after a heat cycle.
For those who don't know, a false pregnancy happens when a female's hormones trick her body into thinking she’s pregnant after a heat cycle—complete with weight fluctuations, nesting behaviors, and milk production, even without any embryos. It’s a fascinating, evolutionary trait left over from wild canines!
Though we won't have a whelping box full of puppies this month, Annie is in perfect health and is still her happy joyful self. We will try again this spring for one of her and Oakley's beautiful litters. 🐾🐾
