Pollen, grass, dust mites, mould, and other substances in the environment can trigger allergic reactions in pets. Common signs include itching, paw licking, inflamed skin, hair loss, hot spots, and recurring ear infections.

Environmental allergies are usually diagnosed using your pet’s history, symptoms, physical examination, and by ruling out other causes such as fleas, infections, and food allergies.

Allergy testing has limitations and does not definitively diagnose environmental allergies on its own. Once environmental allergies are suspected, testing may be used to identify possible triggers and help develop allergen-specific immunotherapy.

Could your pet’s itching, skin irritation, or recurring ear infections be related to their diet?

A food elimination trial uses a veterinarian recommended prescription diet to help determine whether food may be contributing to allergy symptoms. For the trial to provide useful information, your pet must eat only the approved diet, no treats, table scraps, chews, or unapproved flavoured medications.

Most food trials are evaluated over approximately 6–8 weeks, and improvement may be gradual. If your pet responds well, your veterinarian may recommend continuing the diet long term or discussing a food challenge to help confirm the allergy.
