Pain doesn’t always look the same in cats and dogs. Understanding whether pain is acute or chronic can help you recognize when your pet may need veterinary care.

🔹 Acute pain usually comes on suddenly and is often linked to an injury, surgery, illness, or another specific event. It may cause noticeable changes such as limping, crying, hiding, or avoiding movement.

🔹 Chronic pain develops or continues over a longer period of time. It can be harder to notice because pets may slowly adapt to it. You might see changes like sleeping more, being less active, difficulty getting up or using stairs, changes in grooming, or becoming less social.

Cats especially can be very good at hiding pain, so subtle changes in their normal behaviour are important to pay attention to. 🐱

If you notice a change in your pet’s behaviour, mobility, appetite, or daily routine, don’t assume it’s just part of getting older. Pain can often be managed, and your veterinarian can help determine what’s causing it and what treatment options are available. 💙
