We are SO lucky to have bumped in to Buckbeak and his guardians this afternoon at the bark park. Originally, we met up with a friend and their dog Jayce for some on leash reactivity work.

George and Jayce did very well for their brief reunion. After our session was done, we popped in to the dog park. Made sure the person in the park was comfortable with George. Since they were, we stayed.

Shortly after this, handsome Buckbeak entered the park. He is 120lbs if easy going, wonderful love. He is excellent for working on George's excitable mounting of his friends. We exchanged contact info and plan to have frequent play dates.

Anyone can be a dog trainer. No education or licensing required. This means dog guardians have to educate themselves in order make informed decisions.

Imagine explaining to someone that almost anyone can call themselves a dog trainer, yet those same people may be advising owners about fear, aggression, anxiety and welfare.
Why do we ask more questions when choosing an electrician than we do when choosing someone to help with our dog's behaviour?
A slightly philosophical blog about qualifications, expertise, experience and the questions dog owners should really be asking.

My favourite thing about teaching class is watching the "ah-ha" moments and seeing everyone's training mechanics kick in. I am SO impressed with these puppies and their families.

Tonight we introduced Place, Roll Over & Touch. At the end of the session, the puppies enjoyed some cooperative nail trims. They were pampered with snacks while Auntie Jessie trimmed nails.

Truly grateful for this opportunity and the dedicated students.

When bright sunlight started blinding our beautiful Queen Dixie due to cataracts, she became terrified to walk. She would freeze and flinch, losing her confidence. It was hard to see.

Auntie Jessie (who knows a thing or two about light sensitivity) suggested a doggy sun hat. ☀️

With plenty of patience and practice from her amazing guardians, Miss Dixie is officially back! While side walks are slower, Auntie Jessie cues her every time there is a curb to prevent tripping. When we were at the park, Dixie started frolicking again 💗.

It was wonderful seeing everyone at puppy class this week! We focused on essential life skills that strengthen the bond between guardians and their pups. This Auntie's favourite part? Seeing the "aha" moments on the handler's faces as everything came together.

Awesome to see how happy Miss Rosie was during our day training session this afternoon. We have graduated to public parks with wide open spaces. I do not know who had more fun.

One of the best parts of my job is earning the trust of a dog who who is scared of strangers. Bravo miss Rosie 💗

Today marks one full year since the people of Glen Williams and Georgetown came together to help our handsome George. This experience showed me a beautiful side of our communities. While I do not like remembering how scared George was. I loved the teamwork and kindness from everyone involved.

Within 24 hours of creating a poster. I received over 200 phone calls, hundreds of DMs and texts. Multiple new acquaintances invited me into their homes. They gave permission to access their properties 24/7 and do whatever was needed to secure George. Each and every single person who helped is our hero.

A special thank you to Laura with Healing Hearts Lost Pet Search & Recovery for her knowledge, experience, equipment and compassion. Without her dedication and showing up in the earely morning after a graveyard shift. Securing George would have been much harder. George was so scared.

A heartfelt thank you to ANML RESQ Network of Ontario who approved me as a foster and welcomed George in to their rescue. Our family is in the process of foster failing with George. He fits right in.

Another thank you to Omega Canine Services, the canine control for Halton hills. George was in their care for 6 weeks before I found a rescue to accept us in to their foster program.

I want to apologize for the dog training industry. It is messy and unregulated. It is filled with abusive practices and outdated misinformation. Believe it or not, your barber or hairstylist is subject to more licensing and safety regulations than a dog trainer. Anyone can start a dog training business and charge big bucks for their “services” without formal education or certification.

We live in a society where some “trainers” feel comfortable posting videos of themselves blatantly abusing dogs on social media. Animal welfare laws are sub-par at best. Dogs cannot use words. They cannot advocate for themselves. They cannot tell us what happens behind closed doors. They are vulnerable and at the mercy of the people entrusted with their care.

So where can dog guardians find up-to-date, science-based information?

The Canadian Association of Professional Dog Trainers is an excellent place to start. Their mandate is:

“CAPDT serves as the national voice for the dog training profession in Canada. Our members are dedicated to excellence within the profession and to the humane training of dogs.”

Welfare, knowledge, and empathy matter in dog training.
